Are you supposed to be able to use your debit card like a credit card?

Meaning that you can charge stuff from internet sites that take credit cards. The reason I'm asking is because mine sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm not quite sure why. I tried ordering something a day ago online and I got an e-mail saying my card was declined as "Invalid Card". So I e-mailed them back with my CC# again thinking that maybe the one I entered was incorrect but she e-mailed me back again saying that it was the same number they had and to call my CC company. So wtf!? I have enough money in my checking, why does it not go through? I ordered something online a week ago and it went through w/o any problems yet I ordered something before then and I had problems too but they ran it through again and it worked the second time. This is pissing me off....

If your card has a Visa/Mastercard logo on it, I don't see why it wouldn't work...

I've never had a problem using my debit as a credit card. Go to your bank and ask them this question. It really just depends on which bank you use.

- Verify that if you have a separate shipping address, it's listed with the company
- Verify that your ENTIRE address is correct, verbatim. I once had problems because my city was listed with the bank as "RCH PLS VRD" instead of "Rancho Palos Verdes"
- Verify your CID number (3 digit number on the back of your card)
- Make sure that your bank has authorized use online / as a credit card. Some banks limit this feature unless requested.
- Make sure that there is a VISA/Mastercard logo on your card. If there isn't, it's not a check card, just a debit card.

One more tip, don't use that thing online! If some funny extra charges end up on your credit card you can dispute it. You are SOL with a cleaned out bank account in some cases when using a debit card.

Call your bank. I had problems with my debit card for the last month, turns out I'd tripped their fraud detection systems & they'd shut down the CC functions. Debit & ATM functions worked perfectly, but every credit transaction got denied.

Get a real credit card

Like Rossman said, get a real credit card if you qualify for one, if not put some upfront money in the bank for a beginner credit card. There is little protection if you Debit card is fraudulent charged.

It is infact a check card, it's a Visa. The address thing might be it.... I'll check to make sure it's correct now.

I work for a online computer hardware company under credit card verification, and I'll tell you one thing. You are right when you say that it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. It really depends. There are some "debit" cards (depending on the bank) that are NOT disclosed by verisign. Meaning, that when you place an order, the "credit card" that you submitted isn't classified as a CC under verisign's "database" of verification.

Trust me. I understand how you can get pissed. I've dealt with cases where I actually had to manually verify it when the bank, and they are so damn difficult sometimes, that it really pisses me off. It just depends on the company you are purchasing from and what kind of "verisign" contract or system under them they are using.

I hope that makes sense, but if you REALLY wish to avoid any of this, than its simple. Get a real credit card.

danny~!

dude never ever use your debit card for online purchses. if somebody hacks your number they have direct access to your real money.

I purchase stuff all the time online and only use credit cards. That way if somebody makes 2K of fradualt charges its the CC companys problem not mine, and i can still pay my mortage.

Well it's not like I put more than the amount of whatever I'm buying in my checking account anyway... all my money is in my savings. The most I've ever had in my checking account at one time is probably $200.
