Are you still seen as a social pariah if you don't use FB?

I keep forgetting to make a FB so people can contact me that way but I don't really plan to post... or check on it often.

I see it as like email, except nobody uses email for personal communication anymore. I'm sure it'll go the way of AOL and MySpace eventually. Thats one reason I refuse to really invest a lot of time into it.

since whatsapp came, facebook has basically become useless for talking with friends since whatsapp is free and universal too.

I'm in university and it's very useful in order to communicate with classmates I don't know that well though, with groups and all (also because it would be crazy to have a whatsapp group with 100 people in it).

It can also be useful to catch up with aquaintances.

I don't care about wasting time on status updates or sharing bs content though, unless it's updating your profile pic or posting photos/videos who others may want to see (e.g. group photos).
