Kudos to you for keeping your personal moments personal. Most people who share personal crap are doing it to look good in front of their "friends".

This. I use FB to keep in touch with distant family and friends, but it's nowhere near the top of my list of things to play around on.

I think he's using it correctly here... it means "outcast". So in his use "a social outcast" Seems right to me...

No one is being an "outcast"; quite the opposite, they are choosing to not take part in something.

Same here but I did create a fake fb account to get a free computer security program during a giveaway. What does that make me? A sellout, cheapskate, nerd? :hmm:
Thrifty.:p
Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiist ANOTHER ATOT thread about how horrible FB is and how stupid those that use it are?

I use it.
Friends use it.
Family uses it.

A lot of what people share here on the AT forums is not any different than what people share on FB. There's a lot of hypocrisy in that
.
This place is over 9000 compared to that other place.:colbert:

I dunno. I don't use facebook, but no one talks to me so I don't know if they're ostracizing me for it or not.

Exactly. ATOT is basically facebook, just more long-winded posts and more anonymous.

It's amazing how important Facebook seems to be in the business world. A lot of our clients seem to use it to keep in contact with other clients. I mostly use it for entertainment.

My ex posts on FB about our daughter, how she loves and is proud of her. I don't. I tell her directly, face to face, in an actual conversation. But to FB people it must make it look like I'm less involved with my daughter's life and sometimes I have wondered if it affects their opinion of me.

If you have a FB and are active on it while not saying anything about your daughter, people may think that. If you're not active on it, then people would think you're fine.

I just came across a similar situation but in an email thread. A class mom posted that they'll be collecting money for the teacher for end of year. A whole bunch of moms started replying "I'm in!", which wasn't necessary. Do the people who don't respond via "reply all" look like they're not in? :D

No FB.
No smart phone.
Don't text.

But I have you guys. That, by itself, probably makes me a social pariah.:p

You're missing out on the no smart phone thing. It's not just for socializing with people. $50/mo. for data is hard to swallow though, that's why I am ok with $30.

i just hope that the generation that is coming after the current generation uses less and less social media and mobile phones. i know that my wife and i aren't going to allow our son (who is 2 months old) to have a cell phone until he can afford it himself. nothing grinds my gears more than how everyone now a days is always glued to their fucking phone everywhere. you can be anywhere in public and everyone is just face down in their hands looking at their phone, with many of them looking on facebook.

It's just a fad. You all will be trying to friend me because I have a LG 8300 before it's all said and done.:p

10 hrs/day I'm sitting right here with a computer and internet access. Otherwise, I don't know what I'm missing.

Sure, by then everyone will have an augmented reality HUD that fits on their hover chairs.

Someone didn't watch Wall E.

What's the line on this? I may take up that bet...

There's nothing wrong with letting your kids have a phone. How/when they use it is the problem. What you're saying is that if your kid pays for his phone, then it's perfectly fine for him to bury his nose in it. But if you're paying for it, then they can't bury their nose in it?

My kids have phones (11 and 13) and they don't bury their nose in it unless they are chilling at home (disclaimer, my son will use it to chill between games on tournament weekends too). We got them phones as we killed out land line and we certainly need a way to get in touch with them if need be.

Edit: Also.... don't you develop apps for a living? :)

That sounds very familiar. My 14 yo isn't happy about it though.:p

Actually, when he starts driving, I'm sure I'll give in with limits. I have offered him my LG but he declined.

I work from home and still randomly use the smartphone throughout the house. No need to be tied to a computer or wonder where you left the huge tablet. On the go I easily look things up (yelp restaurants, home depot phone number for availability, etc.) and call. Comparison shop amazon.com while in Lowes. Access to coupons while in stores via apps. I can just flip on the gps for my wife's car which I also use a lot (no built-in). My entire music library now also available in both cars. I used to say the same thing you just did.

A lot of people used to say the same thing about having a cellphone at all. No, it's usually not life and death, but it sure makes life easier and better. $1/day for data is an easy choice for me despite being home a lot.

Amusing to see people that really do hate their lives, but when posting on FB they act like they're living the lifestyle of the fabulous, happy and famous.

Most people I know don't use it but have it as a "business/social card" for people that do.

My son bought his own ipod and both Xbox consoles. He flubs up at school, he loses them.

Parental advice posted here, I believe. Guy's daughter is acting up. His friend says buy her a cell phone. Guy asks why? Friend says take it away 2 weeks later.

No doubt they're handy but I'll choose ignorant bliss for a little longer.

I had a bag phone in 1990. Thought I was something.

there is absolutely no reason a kid (in my eyes) that is 11 or 13 needs a phone. we all grew up just fine without them and they aren't necessary. there is no need to be connected 24/7. just because you can doesn't mean it's a need.

if my kid DID pay for his own phone when he can afford it, i would still make sure he didn't bury his head in it. same way my mom made sure i didn't bury my head in my n64 when i bought it when i was 14 at my first job.

kids don't need to be buried in phones during their "down" time. between tournaments i would hope my kid would talk to his teammates and hang out with them, rather than go all hermit on his phone.

and no i don't make apps for a living. i do it on the side for some side cash. and yes, i wish i could have an idea that would have people buried 24/7 on their phones using my apps because that would mean i'm a billionaire.
