Are you still passionate about computers?

If you are in this place, most likely you at least used to be passionate about computers.

Reason why I ask.

I was reading through "Operating Systems" like taking a break from cleaning.

People dissing off Windows or Linux.

I just said whatever. Who cares really.

I'm firmly in the boat "Couldn't care less about them". I'm good at what I can do with them. The only part of computers that really carries any interest is software development. I could lose myself for hours coding. However, better believe that when I'm not working, I don't even want to look at them.

I get annoyed at software problems. I spend $1500 on my custom machine and I expect shit to work. I enjoy the hardware side more; building computers is fun.

Only when it comes to new/emerging technologies, e.g. virtualization.

No, I gave up on seriously trying to understand them my first year in college. Binary math is a beeeotch FFS.

I still like them, and get that warm fuzzy feeling when discussing whetstone and dhrystone, but have since moved on to automobiles. I find the talk of real-world physics much more enthralling than what an electron will do.

My puny system will show that. (I am still on socket 754, remember that one?)

Not really.

I used to be, but then it got much easier to do hardware stuff, there're aren't any really big problems anymore (IRQ errors for example). Everything just kind of works. I got passionate about Linux for a while, but then I realized how silly that was. When Windows XP came out, it silenced most of my complaints about Windows, so I got rid of Linux.

Now it seems like everything is just slowing way down. The hardware companies aren't doing anything terribly interesting (to me at least) and games seem much less enjoyable now. I think that broadband killed my inner gamer.

I miss Fallout, Final Fantasy 3, and downloading home-made Doom levels.

Not all that enthused about them anymore. I keep up with them enough to fix mine or build new ones when necessary. That's about it. Used to stay up on all the latest hardware, software, etc.....now I really don't care about all that crap much.

(without the help of google)

1. Take number, divide by 2. Note number for next division.
2. Write remainder as next highest significant digit.
3. Repeat until number = 0.

For example, 10.

10 / 2 = 5 r 0
5 / 2 = 2 r 1
2 / 2 = 1 r 0
1 / 2 = 0 r 1

Therefore, 10 written in binary is 1010.

I stopped paying close attention when cpus broke the 1 gHz barrier.

Now, I track what is going on with new hardware only when it is time to upgrade, repair, or build a new computer.

I'm not as passionate about it... I remember staying up till midnight to read the articles on new processors or even just some new technology in processors because Anand would talk about how their NDA's end at the end of a certain day, and then it would be up at midnight. I'd schedule things around the articles at times lol... those days are long gone though, I really like laptops because they're just so simple in comparison to a desktop for me, fewer wires, portable, etc.

I have to wonder how someone like Anand stays motivated and in the same field for so long.

With the help of Excel,

23142342 / 2 = 11571171 r 0
11571171 / 2 = 5785585 r 1
5785585 / 2 = 2892792 r 1
2892792 / 2 = 1446396 r 0
1446396 / 2 = 723198 r 0
723198 / 2 = 361599 r 0
361599 / 2 = 180799 r 1
180799 / 2 = 90399 r 1
90399 / 2 = 45199 r 1
45199 / 2 = 22599 r 1
22599 / 2 = 11299 r 1
11299 / 2 = 5649 r 1
5649 / 2 = 2824 r 1
2824 / 2 = 1412 r 0
1412 / 2 = 706 r 0
706 / 2 = 353 r 0

i get more annoyed at hardware problems. i shell out $150 for a fucking motherboard just to find out that resuming from standby is a KNOWN ISSUE WITH MANY GIGABYTE MOTHERBOARDS AND THEY WONT DO JACK ABOUT IT :|

at least with software problems you can find ways aroudn it. for hardware problems it usually involves a lengthy RMA process, loss in time/restocking fees and picking out something else :(

Much easier way would have been to punch that into the scientific calculator in Windows. But you win the roundabout-way-of-doing-things award of the day.

I love computers every time I'm upgrading mine, and every time I read about new processors on the market. After I achieve said processors, I stop caring.

It's really strange.

Meh, I should've saved my money. Bought new parts for Vista, used it for a couple of months, now it's in the closet. Could've used that money for Wii and stuff. Oh well, you only live once.

I lost all interest in computers. I was interested in majoring in CS or EE, but that faded away.

I could care less, I used to be into the whole graphics card scene and keeping up with new cards every 4 months.

Annoying when the top of the line stuff is only top of the line for only so long.

I got a PS3/360 and was done with it.

Huge waste of money.

eh. I like computers -- I better, I work at a data center -- but I don't know if I'd describe it as passionate anymore.

somewhere in the years after college, I stopped feeling motivated to always have the best/newest hardware and totally mod out my PC.

I probably average performance upgrades once every year or two, instead of any time I have the money, like I was in high school/college.

That wasn't the original intent of the question. For example, what if the number was so large that it could not be entered into the calculator?

Never was passionate about computers. It's a medium to connect to the internet and play a game here and there (although i still prefer consoles). I upgrade if i have to in order to something specific (like upgrading HDD for space for my photography).
