Money orders - cost money
Cashiers checks - cost money
Checks from my account - cost pennies and is significantly safer than walking around with hundreds/thousands of dollars on my person.

I use checks for rent and internet, beyond that basically nothing.

Lol at put a car on a credit card. Who the fuck wants to put a 30+k purchase on a credit card. I wouldn't even want a card with a limit that high. I paid for half of my car with a check, didn't have a CC at the time and sure as hell wouldn't have put that amount on it.

You know, you don't actually have to write your own checks to pay people with a check from your own checking account, right? Well, maybe not with your checking account... but with most you can just go on their website, enter the info of who to pay and how much to pay, and the bank will write and mail the check for you - absolutely free! No check writing for you, no stamps, no envelopes.

You can even set up a reoccurring payment so you'll never miss one!

Technology is amazing, isn't it?

Wow, this thread delivers

Anyway, checks still have their uses.

As an example, a couple of weekends ago our hot water heater blew out. Had a plumber come out on Sunday morning to replace it, and I paid him with a **gasp** check. The guy did not take credit cards, and I did not have $1500 cash on hand.

That sounds more time consuming to me than writing a check and handing it over to the recipient. Done in 30 seconds, no need to wait for the mail.

I write checks rarely. The last I remember were $5000 deposit for a house. Deal was late in the evening (10:30pm), no banks open, likely the post office was closed by then too. Credit and debit not accepted by realtors. No fees for cashier’s checks, no need to wait for a check in the mail, no need to go to the ATM and carry around 5000 in cash, 30 seconds to write a check. I'm sure there ARE other ways to do it (cash for example) but none as convenient as a check.

Same deal with when I bought my car. $13,000 check. At the dealership, write check, drive away with car. Credit card limit is too low. Could have gone to the bank, paid for cashier’s check, gone back to dealership... but that seems to me far less convenient.

Oh and I did once to return a tenants damage deposit. $700 I didn't have that much cash. Credit and Debit not an option. Could have gone to the bank, but instead I spent 30 seconds writing a check.

Yes, everything you can pay for with a check has other options for payment. No, they are not all as convenient. I pay my bills online, I pay at shops with credit or cash, or rarely debit. I get cash out of ATMs with Debit. I rarely use check, but I do when they are the most convenient option.

Also, post dated checks are my preferred method for receiving rent. Especially for tenants who are out of town a lot, or less than reliable.

checks are still needed. granted in the last 6 months i have only written 13 of them

though all of them have gone to 3 places. my ex-wife and the propane company (they don't have online payment yet and my bank is not set up that way..thinking of changing banks)

If it takes you more than 30 seconds to type a name, address, and dollar amount, you're doing it wrong.

Also, it's more useful for reoccurring payments, not the larger, one time & on-the-spot payments you are talking about. Sure you can do it for the larger payments (and I have) but it takes planning in advance.

If you have a monthly car or rent payment, why write a check yourself, especially if you have to pay for postage? Just set it up online and a check will be written and mailed for you. I did that when I was renting in college. It was far more convenient than any other option. Rent was the same each month, so I just entered it once and I was done - never had to worry about it again.

The ONLY time I had to give a check within the last decade was for deposit when I moved to a new place, and it was a cashier's check. I didn't write it.

So, strike one more for the retards.

Well sure, mom's usually prefer cash over checks from their "tenants". 😀

You're either retarded, or wilfully ignorant, or both (or you're blahblahyoutoo's other account)

How to pay with online payment: go to the bill pay section of your bank > fill out names and addresses of the people you owe money to (this includes ice cream man and landlords) > enter in the amount of money to be paid> click send. For recurring payments, such as rent, every month just go back to the bill pay section, enter the amount and click send. If you can't figure that out, then keep writing checks.

As for buying big ticket items with card, it's a bit more complicated - it requires money. While I can't help you with acquiring money, I can help you with spending it. What you'd want to do is make sure you have the money in your account, then tell your bank that you will be making a purchase, then make the purchase; if your purchasing power is capped at 500 a day, you got other issues to contend with.

Yes you can get better discounts with a check vs. card, but there are even more discounts to be had with cash transactions. Embrace it.

Blanghorst - I highly doubt it.

That's it, Sssnail - out.

What dealership says no to money? I haven't ran into one, yet. So you can what if all day about that one...

As far as your examples?

Taxes that you mail in.
You... mail.. your taxes in? Wait, you're a CPA right? So that makes sense
Deposit on house/apt(and first month of rent)
This one, it can be your own check, or cashiers
Contractors that work on your house (cash, or check)
Charitable Contributions
I heard you can give to charities over cellphones texting nowadays with those newfangled thingymajigs
Voided check to set-up direct deposit at work
What? Just type your checking account and bank routing numbers in on the ELECTRONIC form
Payment to my auto repair guy(saves him the cc fee)
Cash, save him from having to not worry about your check bouncing. I found that I can get more discount to these types of service if I pay with CASH
Whole bunch of other things I can't remember off-hand
Must be old age...

Speaking of willfully ignorant...

I use a few checks a year, usually for donating to different things, or paying for things like home repairs. I don't want to pay with cash because that means that I need to drive to the bank. I haven't stopped by the bank in months because I don't deal with cash. I've got a box of checks at home that will last me a decade at the rate I'm using them.

For things like car or home repair it's expected that you either pay when they finish doing the work or you arrange some form of payment after they give you the quote. You can either drive to the bank and pick up cash which is quite possibly thousands of dollars (better hope that the bank is open, the ATM won't let you take out a few grand in $20 bills) or you can hand over a check and be done with it.

As for donations over your cell phone, that's fine if you're giving $20 to a charity that you saw on a commercial but I usually give quite a bit more than that over the course of the year to things that aren't set up to accept donations like that.

I don't see what the big deal is about people hating checks, they're useful. Honestly I don't think checks are the form of money that's dated, it's cash. You can get by quite well without ever touching dollar bills. Why would I want to go out of my way to get to the bank to get cash?

I get free checks from my bank if I need them.

I dont think I've used one in the last 5 years or so.

Electronic bank transfers for everything except workmen.

Workmen: pay cash for a 10-15% discount
