I'm surprised that no one has actually won the $1 Million before. MOST of the questions are pretty easy, and I've been out of the fifth grade for 45 years...;)

She says she's giving ALL the money to the state school system.

I hope she does good things with the $$$. I imagine that in Georgia, as in any state, there are lots of places for $$$ to get pissed away needlessly.

edit: looking at my title, "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Frader" finall has a Winner" tells the world I can't type better'n a fifth-frader...:p (fitzed it)

She's the Georgia Superintendent of schools.
They have schools in Georgia?

This show is a shameless rip off of a Howard Stern show bit he's been doing for decades. Personally, I think this show sucks ass.

I have a hard time believing any Georgian is smarter than a fifth grader, unless you're talking about the former Soviet Socialist Republic.

Actually Georgia has pretty good schools. And they actually use their lottery to pay for education.

In Georgia any half decent high school student can get a great scholarship to one of the state colleges there.

A friend of mine from Georgia verifies this. You can basically get a free ride to Georgia Tech (3rd best tech school, right behind MIT and Cal Tech). The DOE hires heavily from there.

Unfortunately, you're also likely to hate college, which is the real price you pay for going to a high-end tech school :p

Every state has some sort of state lottery that "pays for education" but most states tack on so much extra shit that no real money is actually education related. Georgia actually gets props for doing this correctly; the students get a free ride to any state school and the taxpayers don't have to pay any extra for it.

I hate the show mainly because they have more commercials than show. I watched one episode and the one hour time slot contained at least 30 minutes of ads (most hour-long shows have 15-20 minutes of ads).

Also, the people they choose are incredibly stupid. I got every single question right that they asked while I was watching. I think there was one where I was pretty sure but not 100%. They purposely pick dumb people.

Exactly. I couldn't get crap to go to GT because of this (I am sure they are doing fine though).

I live in TX, one of those states that says the money goes to education. Well technically it does, however when they instituted the lottery they took all the money that WAS going to education and moved it, so there were no improvements at all.

And I don't know about 3rd for GA Tech, but it's definitely up there.

Wasn't Georgia the first state ever to have a school lose accreditation?

That was the Clayton County school system. It lost its accreditation because the school board for the county was a bunch of putzes.

There are several good school systems in Georgia but the state as a whole is dragged down by the city of Atlanta schools.

I send my kids to private school though despite living in one of the better counties. That's because the school borders changed and we are now in the school zone for a school loaded with kids of illegal aliens and doesn't perform all that well instead of one of the better schools in the county where we were before. There's been lots of complaints from other parents in my neighborhood about this and have put their kids in a local Charter school or private schools.

She's not really any good at her job though. Pretty much any teacher in GA is not at all fond of her. Sorry I can't give you examples I just know shes kind of an idiot.

and lets clear some stuff up here. Theres this program called HOPE. This is paid for by the lottery. However it does NOT completely pay for schooling. If you meet the criteria(B average or better) then you get the funds. This is somewhere around 1800 a semester. If you get below a B average within 30 hrs you loose this money until your GPA gets back to a 3.0.

It use to pay more but over the past few years the costs have risen so much that they have had to restrict the amounts they hand out. It's a good program and nice to have, but it will only pay the whole way through if you go to a cheaper school. It's what I did for my first year in college. HOPE along with another scholarship I got meant I didn't pay a dime for college my first year.

If she's giving all the money to the school systems, then she's definitely NOT smarter than a fifth grader.

I believe they get scholarship money.

And IIRC, on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader, you lose ALL of your money if you opt to go for the last question and fail. There is a big disincentive to try to get the top prize.

What will Dave McOwen have to say about this?
