You realize YOU HAVE TO BE BRAIN DEAD. How do you misrepresent a flat line on a EEG. Until you die mentally, the hospital cannot touch your organs.

no that isnt true. if you have dnr on your chart, you can be a living breathing person and they will let you die to harvest your organs. but at least in death youll be giving the gift of life to a bunch of other people right?

If you tell someone to not revive you, they won't revive you. Amazing, its like they are doing what you told them to do.

Yep. It's either waste a ton of money by keeping you alive, and not seeing a dollar; or make a ton of money by killing you and giving your organ to someone more deserving.

Hospitals are businesses like anywhere else. They are not out to help you. I am sure if I personally needed a kidney, my status in society would ensure me that I'd be so low on the list that it would just be a formality to be on that list.

this is exactly right, health care is primarily a business. all hospitals have cost control people who monitor expensive cases and try to nudge families to dnr or have them moved to other facilities.

the point is, maybe it wasnt what you wanted. lets say your dad has a stoke unexpectedly. the cost control "social worker" comes in and sees an expensive, drawn out case so he tells you, the decision maker, to agree to dnr or he tells you he cant recover (even if it isnt true) and the care of your dad will bankrupt you. theyre looking out for their pocketbook, not your family member.

when i'm chilling up on the mothership, i want my innards intact. i don't want to look down and see some asstard running around with my liver while the space lords tell me i can't enjoy a frosty beverage because i ain't got no liver.

I'm just going to put a /facepalm right here.

If it's what you Dad wants, to be an organ donor, its what he gets. You do realize the doctors themselves ask the family what to do, and gives them the best possible prognosis. If you think the DOCTORS lie about whether or not its worth trying to keep someone alive even though they have no brain activity, I don't know what to say.

You should have to opt out, not opt in. :( Its a shame the world doesn't work like that.

Seriously this. Studies have shown that a lot of people are not registered more out of laziness and or lack of time than anything else.

Not being a donor strikes me as just being horribly selfish for no reason.

My priority list would look a little something like this...
children > donors > non-donors > convicts.

I'd take it a step further. If you aren't an organ donor yourself, you aren't eligible for an organ you may need if/when the time comes.

Or to phrase it differently, if you want to get on a list - you yourself have to sign up to become a donor in order to even get on the list for an organ. Without the possibility of removing yourself as a donor after the transplant.

they dont just do it to people that have "no brain activity". keep that in mind. and yes doctors and hsopitals do lie, they have to think about the bottom line cost, not your life. im just trying to spread the word about the hazards of organ donation...

Fine, it also only happens when your heart dies, not cardiac arrest, when the heart tissue is dead to the point where it cannot pump anymore, also loss of brain activity.

Those are the only instances where your body is up for organ donation.

most people who would be on the list wouldnt be eligible to donate. they have cirrhosis, cancer, etc...

do your studies show that all it takes is checking a box when you get your drivers license? or are you just making shit up?

Doesn't matter. Still increases pool of available organs. Also, just because one organ isn't that healthy doesn't mean another organ isn't perfectly viable. Different organs have different standards for transplantation.

Actually they do. I've read the same study myself. They said that because it takes effort to mark that check box, people just skim over it.

People just overlook it, obviously. Or you simply don't think about it or its importance at 16 yo when you get it, and then you never see that box again.

so you're saying people have the time to get their license renewed, but not to check the box?

i see it every time i get my license renewed. you know why? because they give you a discount if you are an organ donor. and they tell you about it, even if you're already an organ donor.
