Are you sff people nuts? This SB61G2 sounds like a hairdryer!

Omg, I put this thing together on a lark to check it out, was considering it as a replacement for my desktop.

It sounds like a little jet!

Replace the fans. I don't understand why people are so surprised about this, it's posted over and over again that they aren't that quiet. My window unit AC is louder than my SN41G2, so it doesn't bother me. When winter rolls around, I may replace the fans, since it'll be quieter in that room.

Also, cutting out the fan covers in the back will help cut down on air turbulence (noise). I notice that my Shuttle is much quieter with the cover off...

The only one I have experience with is an SK41G that a friend built, very quiet right out of the box!

I have a SB61G2, and it isn't loud at all! If the fan guardian is kicking up the rpm's of the ice fan, you probably are either overloading your case with parts or have somehow caused your processor to overheat. The shuttle is not intended to run 2x120gb 7200rpm drives (like i'm doing😉), an Ati 9700 pro+, an audigy 2, and another high powered optical drive, used in conjunction with an OC'd processor! They have 200W PSU's! My shuttle is spec'd as follows, and runs very quietly:

SB61G2
P4 2.4C (stock)
1Gb PC2700 corsair xms
120GB Seagate Barracuda
Ati Radeon 8500LE (soon to be 9100)
LG DVD/CD-R/W

when i put a second hdd in, i modded the hdd rack so that i could mount 2x50mm fans right in front of the drive cage, and use the floppy drive front hole as an air intake. In conjunction with a pci slot blower, the case is now significantly louder.

May i repeat to you, if you want a quiet computer, don't stress it with massive components! Although there are many mods you can do to quiet it down, including using speedfan at 2-5%, you also have to remember that hdd's don't like being above 50deg celsius. I hope this helps.

ps. - use artic silver on the proc!

Wow, nice pick with the LG combo drive! I picked the exact same model for my SB51G!

Anyway, my XPC is pretty quiet. Even with a 2.53 Ghz P4 in there, the ICE fan never seems to kick into high speed.

I had the original, the SV24...and Jesus H. Christ that thing was loud. I switched out the PSU (with a new revision), the back fan, and the CPU fan, and it was still not what I'd consider quiet.

Sold it on Ebay a few days ago for $220 though so i'm happy.

I'm with you! I owned a Shuttle SK41G and I couldn't stand the noise. I guess the people saying it was "quiet" either live in a noisy atmosphere or are too used to massive, buzzing fans.

Me - I'm used to a near-silent Dell. The Shuttle XPC was FAR from, "Silent" let alone "Quiet".

I want to know where I can get some of those turbine fans Dell is using in their new smaller pc's. They're amazingly quiet. I searched all over for them, but couldn't find any resellers of the brand (I forget what brand they were).
