are you really great or an expert on something?

i'm good with lots of different things but not extremely great or an expert at anything.
i know a good bit about computers but there isn't one thing i'm specialized in.

like i see people who are awesome at playing guitar, know everything about computers, can write books, etc and i get jealous or angry that i can't do anything like that.

i guess its mostly because i'm not happy with my job and want something different, but i have no skills in anything else.

I'm great at sports. Not many people have the depth and ability in various sports as I do. I may not be an expert at anyone of them but the variety and ability in each of them, few people will match.

I hear some musicians and think f0ck that is good! But for me personally I can't be bothered to commit the time to play and learn it as I don't love it. I love my sports.

Mastery of almost anything comes with time, dedication and experience. If you truly love something and spend an inordinate amount of time doing it, and redoing it, and doing it again, and analysing it from every angle you can't help but become an expert.

9 times out of ten if you find someone is a real expert at something, chances are they love it to the point of obsession and have spent more time honing their skills than most normal people could tolerate.

yes, but not so much now, been a while since i have done what i used to be great at. anything really takes so much practice that when you are done competing, and you leave it for a while you are not at competiton level anymore.

So true.

I think about weightlifting often and think of the magical 300 often during the course of a day...yes it probably is an obsession but there are worser obsessions. Well that is what I tell myself anyway

I used to pitch a baseball really well (not Roy Oswalt well, of course, but I definitely had a desire to play for the majors), until I had a few rib injuries. I'm honestly heartbroken about it, especially since I live about two blocks south from the local college diamond. Every time I drive by the field it feels as if I've been dumped from a long-term relationship.

These days I make an okay living by way of graphic design and web development, but I'm not fantastic at any one thing in particular. I'm a technical writer via my college education, so I know what makes a "good document." It's just that my own visual creativity needs a wee bit too much inspiration from secondary sources.

I'm an expert in aviation. It helps to prevent crashing.

I'm an expert in Alaskan geography and history.

I'm an expert in baseball cards, and particularly cards of Randy Johnson. I have the 3rd largest known collection in the world of his cards.

My friends say I'm an expert at belching. They grade each one in four categories...volume, tone, consistency and duration. I'm trying to get them to add a fifth one... odor... but they aren't interested.

On a more serious note, it's hard to denote who is and isn't an 'expert' - I mean, I had this unhealthy obsession with martial arts, and was an instructor in several styles, but do I match up to the masters that have come before me? Of course not - but on the flipside, do I compare with the beginners and (even) some of my peers? Undoubtedly.
