I’d like to know if you are planning to purchase a 4K monitor in the near future

  • I plan to buy a 4k monitor within the next month or so.

  • I am waiting for the cost of 4K monitors to decrease.

  • I will need to upgrade my GPU(s) first.

  • I do not have plans to purchase one at this time.

  • I already have a 4k display.

The viewing angle is nice to me on my cheapy ips because it's on a wall mount swivel, I pull it out and toward the table in the living room for movie watching during dinner and it's handy to be able to tilt it a bit off to the side to remove glare from a lamp or the fireplace. Compared to my old TN the colors stay more true with it off a few degrees. Not the end of the world, but it's useable daily progress imo.
My very non technical wife noticed it. I don't doubt some TN's do as well or better, but what matters to me is comparing my then $200ish-LED 24" TN to the $300 27" IPS I replaced it with last year.

Interesting part is that for TV viewing CNET commented that a 55" LG 1080p OLED was the best performing/picture quality TV they have ever tested.

http://www.cnet.com/products/lg-55ec9300/

Goes to show just how important constrast ratio, black levels, colour accuracy and viewing angles are vs. high PPI. It might take a while for PC monitors to adopt OLED since even for TVs it is an extremely niche product aegment at the moment.

Yeap, 3440x1440 120Hz OLED freesync and im sold ;)

With the current advancement (or lack thereof) in the GPU space, absolutely not. My next display will be a 1440p freesync type, probably the at CES announced Benq one with 144 hz and strobing.

You can use strobing on less demanding titles and freesync for the new ones. For 4K you need multi-gpu and forget 120 hz.

I always wondered this about IPS and people freaking out about viewing angles. Do you guys typically use your monitor sideways? Generally, I sit directly in front of my monitor but is there a benefit from standing off axis and looking at it from massive angle?

I like to lean back, put my feet up and play with a controller sometimes. Literally the best part about having no color shift is that you can treat your monitor like a TV and make yourself comfortable in front of it. Hell, my monitor is 27 inches which is already TV territory as far as I'm concerned. :p

I can trade it in for high Hz and low persistence. I game sometimes on my plasma and the difference in motion clarity is pretty notable even though the plasma is also 60Hz like my monitor. Well, plasmas have other issues of their own, too...

I need a new monitor soon, but I will not be buying until the adaptive sync range of monitors is better & i have more info. I always hated the way 60hz CRTs felt, and I can feel higher refresh panels in FPS games; so I've currently my sights on the next generation of IPS panels.

But if my hunch is correct & adaptive sync monitors feel better at the 40-60hz range: I'll grab a 4k monitor and not look back.
