Are you planning on joining a gym after new years?

Well please don't. There is nothing more annoying than a bunch of people that stay out of shape all year and after watching Oprah they decide it's time to join a gym. It's not gonna work. Save your money and stay out of my gym. All you do is overcrowd the place and get in the way of those of us committed to keeping ourselves healthy. It's like clockwork every year. So I'll help you out and save you the trouble of joining and quitting once you realize it's easier to eat Mcdonald's watching tv.

One more thing. I enjoy using the stair climber machine and there is nothing more annoying than some fat arse using it at a turtle pace. Get the fvck off of it and start with a freaking treadmill. If you have trouble walking what makes you think you can climb stairs!

This is in the right forum. Health and fitness forum doesn't need to join a gym at new years

Totally agree. I work at a university, so I can use their fitness facilities. They are absolutely packed 3 times a year. First week of fall classes is bad, first week of spring classes are bad, and the week before spring break is really bad.

The week before spring break is actually the worst of the three. I just don't get it. Are people really that stupid that they think they can get in shape in 1 week? All the frat boys show up to do the beach routine (pecs and biceps), and all the girls show up to use the cardio like they are gonna burn off 20lbs of fat in 7 days.

First week of spring classes is the second worst because its all the people who have new years resolutions so it is usually packed.

First week of fall classes is bad because all the freshmen come in to use the gym and none of them clean up after themselves. They just leave dumbells laying around all over the place, and if they do put them back they don't put them back in the right spots. It's a giant clusterfuck.

yea the first 2-3 weeks of january is always more crowded than normal. the good thing is 90% of those people do shit wrong and see no results so they dont come back in february and everything is back to normal.

this is slightly off subject but I just wanted to touch on this subject...

it is funny how everyone wants "big arms" and they think all you need to do is a bunch of curls.

2 months ago i hurt my shoulder and I do not know how but it kept me from doing shoulder, chest, and tricep exercises for about 6 weeks. i started back up again 2 mondays ago. i did however continue to do legs, back, biceps, traps, and abs.

during this time, my biceps gained a little bit of strength, and my arms got SMALLER. the reason? my shoulders and triceps were not being worked out...

having developed shoulders and triceps play such a huge part in how "big arms" are defined and maintained. so anyone out there who is reading this and thinks they want to get massive arms, do yourself a favor and work your shoulders and triceps just as much as your biceps.

There was a story kicking around about how a bodybuilder bet some n00bs that heavy squats would do more for there biceps than curls. He won the bet.

I'm not a noob and heavy squats is my fav weight lifting but I'm not sure it works your biceps.

I've been a gym member for years... I hate Jan, it's always packed with noobs trying to lose weight on a new years resolution. They hog all the equipment, take forever and barely get a good workout in. Like you'd see them walking on the treadmill for an hour at 2mph and think they're on the way to a 6 pack within a month. I mean really, at 2mph, can't you just take a stroll in the city instead? Time flies a lot quicker and you save yourself $80/month. Then you got others taking up benches doing 100 bicep curls with 5lb dumbbells over 10 mins. sigh The Gyms must be happy though since most members have to pay an initiation fee and sign a contract for at least a year as a new member.

LOL I agree.

Ironicly I am planning to join but not because of weight loss and new years resolutions and all that, just because I quit and decided it's time to get back. probably not the best time though as yeah, it will be overcrowded. What pisses me off is people who claim 4 machines at once. Stick to one machine, do all your sets, then move to another. Feel free to go back but don't claim it if you're not using it!

What's even worse is while doing this the guy either has on weight lifting gloves with the fingers exposed or a tight under armour spandex shirt with a beer belly.

I hate it too, but those new year's resolution people probably do more to keep my gym in business than I do considering the fact that they all will probably pay for at least a month or two during the time that they've given up on fitness and no longer attend.

I was gonna say - why would the changing of the year factor into my fitness plan?

Sheep man. Everybody is a sheep. Or a lemming.

New years resolutions - bah....

Spends-Cember - BAH!

Christ-Kwanz-Hannukah - BAH!!!!!!!

I will be going back to the gym in the middle of January. In my defense though, I'm just coming off of an injury to my shoulder last month and I should be feeling good in a few weeks.

I believe it has something to do with legs being the largest muscle group in your body. Heavy Squats cause your body to release large amounts of growth hormone to help repair and build up the torn broken down muscles. This will help other parts of your body also since they will use the growth hormone released by the heavy squats. Also with heavy squats your still using your arms a bit to stabalize the bar on your back and that will help with improving your arms. Its not squats give you big arms, more like incorperating heavy squats will your workout will increase gains in other body parts also.

yea but thats not what he said.

he said squats would do more for your biceps than curls, not that squatting while doing curls will do more for your biceps than just curling.

No, I'm not, but get ready for it...the gyms and health clubs DEPEND on a bazillion of people deciding "I need to lose weight and get in shape. I'm joining a gym...and THIS TIME, I'm gonna stick with it."
Of course, by mid-February, 80% have dropped out...but the gym still gets to keep the initiation fee...
