On three separate occasions, in 3 different cities, I have been eligible for unemployment and visited the appropriate offices. Each time, I took one look around, walked out and just went and got a job instead.

My town has a HUGE neighborhood where everyone is on the dole. I won't even stop at a gas station down there and try not to even drive through it.

I think that there are vouchers that are now used st food stores. Technology had overcome your stereotype.

Internet comes on phones, available at libraries and a multitude of other places where snobs do not congregate.

In Illinois most welfare recipients get what is called a Link card. It's kind of like a credit card but the state puts the appropriate amount of money on it ever month and when its gone you have to wait till next month.

When you go into the grocery stores here you will see orange stickers below the items that say WIC approved. You can only purchase those approved items with your link card.

I work for the welfare office out here in CA. My family doesn't qualify. Believe me, after my wife and I got layed off from our last jobs (pink slips were given to my wife and I on THE SAME DAY), I looked. I took a $30k/yr paycut and ironically ended up being placed in the welfare dept. where my household still doesn't qualify. We were fortunate enough to get placed in jobs, but believe me the stories you hear about welfare recipients are true.

I believe WomenInfantsChildren is related, but different. WIC covers things that are especially good for maternity purposes, while "food stamps" are restricted, but more liberal. That's my understanding anyway.

You're right. I'm not to familiar with the system or how it works anymore since my wife and I now have decent jobs and no longer need it.

Ran into same problem when laid off on mid 90's. Wife went to apply and was told/laughed at.
1) they look at income from past x quarters for determination.
2) one said unemployment was more than her income.

Never been on welfare. I've been on unemployment at various times throughout my life but not welfare.

My ex used to have a bridge card (what Michigan calls their EBT food stamps) in college. Tons of kids had them, regardless of their situation. Got $250/mo or something. If I had gone to school in Michigan, I could have gotten them even though my parents paid for my entire education.

Apparently they finally locked down last year.

So, I guess I have eaten welfare food at one point in my life. If that counts.

Nope. Never got anything from the government that I didn't pay for. Never been on unemployment either.

Food is so expensive. I would just go to Food 4 Less with my food stamps.

This was proposed in Toronto earlier this year. A bit of background first. Welfare in Ontario is run by the municipalities. They receive money from the province but are in charge of distributing it. To cut down on costs, the city's new right leaning mayor wanted to institute these re-loadable cards. It would save money because no cheques would have to be mailed out. It would also prevent welfare recipients from spending money on things that weren't necessities of life. Mainly booze and casinos.

The social democrats on council kicked up one hell of a stink. They argued that the cards would single welfare recipients out. Not only that but they have the right to spend their money on whatever they want. Needless to say the cards never got put into practice.

Nope. Heck even when we needed help we couldn't get it. The system is flawed and gamed to death. Major reform is needed but it's not going to happen anytime soon. Start with random drug testing where everyone is hit at least twice a year and failing is auto DQ for a couple of years. It was a great program for what it was designed for but that has long past. We are on third generation abusers. I see it all day, everyday.

They want to blow their money on booze, I say let them. I worked for the social services department for a few summers and it's a pretty well organized operation. It's hard as hell to get additional money if you blow what they give you a month (it's very very little, like $600/month a few years back - more if children).

How is $600/mo, or more, "very very little"? The problem is most don't need this money here. They scam the system so it's $600 or whatver extra they get to blow on bullshit every month, at all the legitimate worker's expense.

Don't know about you, but I'd be extremely happy to have an extra $600/mo to fuck off.
