I was just browsing the video forum and I seen some people are spending $1200+ on video cards, so I wonder how many are serious gamers, or they have to have the latest and greatest ?

I'm a hardware enthusiast - and I don't have the latest and greatest. I just sell it to other people.

No, wait, no I don't anymore. Stupid legislation.

out of those two choices, gamer (though I'm no hardcore gamer)

i don't really care about pc hardware until i have to buy something. more into the software side of PC's (games, programming etc).

i'd call myself a serious gamer, but i see no point in upgrading when my current rig and admittedly aged 9800 pro can play EVERYTHING that is out there very well at 1024 at least with all the eyecandy on, especially since i only have a dual 17" CRT setup atm...

I'm one of those cheapos who buys a mid-range computer and squeezes as much life out of it as possible, even if it means playing new games on the lowest possible settings with 10 fps.

I play games occasionally....and the games I play are very demanding....ie Doom3 off of preorder. I'm more of an enthusiast though.

Enthusiast. I buy the best bang for the buck (3200 venice, x800xl, etc) and o/c it all. Sell it off to friends and keep upgrading that way.

I buy expensive things and I play probably 10 hours a week (probably for a few months a year when I have a good game) which is nothing. So I guess I am more a hardware enthusiast who likes to waste money.

neither? I hardly ever game (occasionally with friends, tho), and I dont spend my money on my computer (though I am going to build a new one, because I OC'd my old one to death and I'm sick of this 400Mhz piece)

but i upgrade less frequently than most...my current pc was built in 2003, the only new things in it are a video card and some hard drives...

I'm somewhere in the middle, I guess. I do enjoy playing games at high resolutions and settings, but I also don't seem to play as much as I once did. I still enjoy having a nice computer though (so that whenever I do game, it looks nice and plays well ;)).

I'm neither. I just like to be able to run what I want to run, and if I have to upgrade, so be it. For example, I bought HL2, but didn't buy a top of the line video card -- I settled for an older radeon 9800 pro which is quite capable for the game. I just can't justify $500+ for a video card.
