I think that the suggestion of a 350 watt power supply needed when running a Geforce 6800 at "full load" is way off the mark. There are so many posts of people having to replace power supplies exceeding 400 watts to get these video boards to run stable it is a crime!

Does anyone else feel this way?

mmm probably because they are Crap PSU's... Ther are plenty of people running the GT's on a quality 250's all over the place as well.

Or more likely, they have excess amounts of hard drives and fans if they belong to forums like these. Mostly enthusiasts with multiple hard drives configured for RAID 0 and 18 cooling fans. There are many variables to account for here.

I have a 350W so-so no name PSU in my rig with 2 optical drives, 1 200GB hard drive, P4 mobo, SB audigy 2, Pinnacle vid capture card, PCI gigabit NIC, and a PNY 6800GT.

As far as cooling fans, I have 1 120mm on the side.

You cant compare one rig to the next. They are all different.

If you have a no name brand PSU, you should change it regardless.

As was stated above, GT's run fine in SFF's using 250's.

As others have said, they probably have a cheap powersupply.

i have only a 200W PS in my Shuttle with a 6800 GT, 1GB RAM, 1 optical, 1 HD and an overclocked Barton. I have had no problems at all.

My brother has a 350 watt powersupply and his 6800 ultra runs great. He also has a raid set up.

Looks like you're the mad one 😉

Wait a friggin second, if I am to understand your messege correctly, your saying that my antech 430watt ps is going to be too much and that I have to downgrade to a 350 watt? WTF?

Power supplies are one area where it's better to shoot for quality rather than quantity (of watts).

No, he's saying that people with up to 430watt PSU's have had to replace them because they are supposedly not providing enough power. If this is true, chances are these PSU's are of the el-cheapo variety.

Oh okay I guess he just said it wrong. Because if you know anything about english (not trying to be insulting as I know this might be an international community), you would know that exceeding 400watts that he would mean greater then 400 watts.

If your 400w power supply was free bundled with your case... and your case was $45...

well... im not even gonna finish that.

Yeah my 6800GT runs no problem on my 350W Enermax PSU.

People should realise that Watts are not everything. I recently had a laugh at a friend who was raving cause he got a 500W PSU after checking it puts out less on the 12V line than my my 350W enermax!

Do they have THIS power supply? 😕

These examples come to mind...

and

Link02

but, hey!

Lets get the names of those 200 watt power supplies out there that do the trick!

I agree that future 6800 owners better shop for quality. In my case (npi) the Silent Purepower 560watt
did the job.

Not all of them. I cant get mine to run in my Biostar 200V. Couldnt get my 5900NU to either. Its reboots randomly, and has the pop up that tells me its not getting enough power. I used a seperate PSU and hotwires it for the card alone, and left it on the desk. Not what I want to do with 2 kids, so I sold the 5900NU.

But as others have said, if you have a quality 350w PSU you should be fine. Unless you're overclocking a lot, 4 HD's, 3 ROM's, 10 fans, etc. Then you may not have enough power... But for the normal user it should be fine.
