here is a nice little quiz we can all take:
quiz

We know that can be a tough question as you may have heard many different definitions of the word "libertarian" or maybe you met a few people who identify themselves as such.

Let's see what Webster's has to say about it:

Pronunciation: "li-b&r-'ter-E-&n
Function: noun
1 : an advocate of the doctrine of free will
2 a : a person who upholds the principles of absolute and unrestricted liberty especially of thought and action b capitalized : a member of a political party advocating libertarian principles

While many may quibble with the definition, we think it's close enough.

Simply put, if you believe that you are responsible for yourself and your family, and not the government, then you belong with us.

too bad the current political spectrum will not allow a third party. people need to realize that it isn't all black/white red/blue. and there has to be a viable 3rd party leader. haven't seen one of those in a while.

Don't agree with the drug issue, and don't support welfare/charity. Other than that, heck yeah.

If you want to know what a Libertarian truly is, check out this lovely article in our local university paper. I know it gave me a good understanding.

this is the sad, sad truth....lib views make the most logical sense (to me at least) but even though a good amount of people agree they still vote dem or rep because they think lib will never win :(

anywho, on Q2 i voted

"I didn't vote (I didn't know where/when or wasn't sure if i could vote)"

i was at school (registerd in home county) and didnt realize i didnt have to register in this county to vote here :( u would have voted Lib though

My wife is a lib, but won't admit it, and says she is republican, and that I am "throwing my vote away" when I vote (mostly) libertarian. Red/blue dem/repub sucks. Washington needs nuked and we need to start over. I would rather have my neigbor elected to congress, even if we disagree, because he is a decent person, who would do his best to serve people, not grub for power....

I think moving towards libertarianism is a good idea. I don't think it should be done overnight, though. Need some transitional time that allows for people to ramp up to it and take responsibility.

that columnist is correct but only towards UBER libretarians...however, he is completely wrong about the economics part. libs dont have any desire to make public schools shittier than they already are, its about cutting taxes in places they dont need to be (such as drug wars) and spending them on things such as school...after you cut out a lot of the stupid departments and wars there is a shitload of money left...pay down debts...then assuming schools and other needed systems are running at peak you can drop taxes dramatically

Exactly. I actually responded to his post and said something similar to that. I consider myself a moderate Libertarian and tried to let him know that what he said is only true of a certain type of Libertarian, as you called "UBER". Not sure it sunk in as he just seems to be an overall pissed off person, but I found the article pretty sad.

That is one of the biggest problems with the libertarian banner--it encompasses too many varieties. A lot of libertarians I know identify with minarchism. Is "UBER" libertarianism too extreme?

Would you support public schools as a libertarian?

I've been a Libertarian since before I knew there was a party that represented my views...I'm 39, and from the time I was 16 I've always said I was socially liberal (people, not govt, should be responsible for themselves) and fiscally conservative (our government and taxation is way out of hand). It was probably 15 years ago when I started listening to Neal Boortz, when he was a local guy in Atlanta, before I realized I was a Libertarian.

And please don't refer to Libertarian as "libs" - most people associate that abbreviation with Liberals.

Liberterian, but I will vote Republican, mainly because I want to keep the dems out of office. Republicans >>>>> dems.
