Are you interested in genealogy?

My in-laws are visiting and my father-in-law has me researching his family history. I think that he wants to drag me to the local Mormon office to do more research.

Frankly, I fail to see the point of it.

Who cares about ancestors who lived in 1700s?

Am I missing something?

Its actually pretty cool, and it gets addicting. I researched some of my lines back to the early 900's. You'll probably find out some very interesting stuff. I found out I have a second cousin who has won a couple of Grammy's, and my father's family is descended from the first royal family of Norway.

Family history is cool IF there's an actual history to discover and read. Otherwise, the stuff is dull as a table knife.

As soon as I saw that word "geneology" (genealogy) my first thought was "Oh good Christ, here come the Mormons again".

How it is the Mormons are so fascinated with such things is beyond me. I, too, find it pointless.

Being a Mormon, I will come right out and say there's an ulterior motive to all of this genealogy. Look out! :Q

The REAL answer:evil:😉

My wifes grandmother has filecabinets full of papers that she has researched on their family history. Yeah Im not interested either but she does want me to find info on one more guy for her. Shes stuck.........so you guys trace James Archer Elmore back to Pocohontas for her. Just a couple of generations she told me...

thanks guys......🙂

I always thought about it, but it's too much work beyond the beginning of the 20th century. Where my mom's side left Italy it gets very fuzzy.

My father's side has been in America for centuries and it's also really hard to trace.

I think its kind of interesting. I'd like to know where our family came from.

I agree! The Mormoms keep an awesome database for people doing such research.

Look, just cuz you were raised a pagan doesn't mean the rest of the world can't have an appreciation for thier family and history. 😛 😉

We've been working from the Mormon website but we need to go the archives and look at microfilm to get more info.

I warned my father-in-law about not giving out any personal info.

You make it out like we're a bunch of scammers that would steal a exploit your personal info.

If you don't want the messages they bring, just tell them to not contact you. That's all it takes.

I wasn't suggesting that they do anything illegal or inappropriate with the info.

They will contact you though and I don't think he wants that.

I was in SLC recently and visited Temple Square. After the tour They were very interested in getting my name and address, but I politely thanked them for the visit and declined giving out the information.

I enjoyed the visit and talking to the folks there but I have zero interest in becoming a Mormon.

Genealogy is very interesting. I have even taken a Y-DNA test to see how related I was to other McGlennon's who took the test.

I think just the amount of reseach you can do, and the progression of traits though family lines is cool. You can even predict what kind of traits your kids might have...

I am currently working on a PHP driven family tree that stores info in the database about each family member. So that way my grandfather, aunts, uncles, etc. can login, and edit their info and add/edit people/info into the family tree/database/history that I may not know.

For those of you have researched your family history, how has it personally benefited you?

I figure that if I am related to a famous person I would know about it already, and if I am related to a scoundrel, I don't want to know about it.

Chances are my ancestors are average Joe's, who tried to do the best they could in a hostile world, just like me.
