Are you guys getting the Basic Ipad 3 or LTE version?

Thinking of just the Basic.

I wonder if I can tether my Internet from my phone to the new Ipad.

$130 is a pretty hefty price for a $20 LTE chip. You're better off getting a tethering plan for your smartphone.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get the Wifi version and get an LTE phone to tether(if you have a phone that can do that without getting caught) or pay for mobile hotspot/tethering plan?

The only difference between the iPad3 Wifi and LTE version is just LTE, right? There's no change in the battery specs and such?

I prefer to just pick it up and have it work without having to turn the tethering on my phone on/off. It's worth the extra for me.

The other benefit for the LTE version is the GPS. Unless something has changed, the WiFi version just uses wifi location to try and find you, the cellular version has actual GPS.

Not sure about the latter, but do people actually do GPS navigation on a 10" screen? That seems excessive to me.

I've been teetering on whether I should buy one to replace my iPad 2. I would much prefer having modems in each device, as I don't exactly want to keep drain my phone's battery to power my tablet's browsing capability. The tablet serves as more of a consumption device (given its lack of an ability to make calls), and I'd much rather it run out of batteries than my phone. Plus, I would assume that it would be even worse on batteries all around since your phone would be using WiFi + mobile and your tablet would be using WiFi instead of just one device using mobile.

Well, that's all and good, but the price tends to push me away a bit. I would pretty much be sold if AT&T would just release the shared data plan. According to that article, Verizon is planning something similar. :hmm: That might get me to switch camps if AT&Ts LTE expansion is unable to catch up with Verizon.

EDIT:

Sounds a lot better than a 3.5" screen. :p

I disagree. I really regret getting the 16gb iPad 2 last year. Once you start installing apps 16gb is not enough. Go 32.

I don't see how 16gb isn't enough for apps.

I can see it being not enough for HD videos, but apps? come on.

I've never had an issue with not enough storage on 16gb, plenty of apps.

I also stream everything.

Once they start pushing games designed for that super high res screen I imagine the app size will increase quite a bit. That cpu/gpu and screen combo is going to make for some pretty rowdy mobile gaming. My 16gb iPhone warned me a few days ago that I didn't have room to record more video, and I only had a handful of big games and a few hundred pics.

I guess if you are going to just use the iPad 3 to read books, web pages and recipes it is fine but if you want to use that awesome GPU you need more space. With textures included some of the games are over a gig. That eats space quickly.

I'll be getting the 32 GB without 4G. I don't feel like paying for a data plan. Unless you are in the middle of no where it's not that hard to find a WiFi hotspot. Beside most of the time I will be using it at home with my network.

I have 2GB left on my 64GB iPhone and 8GB left on my 64GB iPad. :|

Although, there was a lot of talk about that very subject in another thread, but it's pretty much that I don't micro-manage my apps much. If I have the space available, I might as well use it rather than sit there thinking, "Oh, I wish I would have put that app on my phone!"

We used someones iPad quite a bit to get around in London. You dont necessarily need to turn on Nav and set it in the dash for it to be a very useful feature to have.

I currently have a 32GB iPad with AT&T 3G. I ordered a 32GB wifi iPad 3 this time around. I'll just tether with my Galaxy Nexus when I'm not at home.

Yea, but its not like its completely location-ignorant with WiFi location services. If you're just trying to find some quick directions or a nearby coffee shop, I would think WiFi tracking is plenty.

I realize "real" GPS is better, but like I said above...worth $130? I dunno about that.

My wife doesn't have any music or movies on hers. I jailbroke it and she uses the camera kit+a 32GB SD card + XBMC for media.

Even without the media she has to carefully manage her apps- its a pain. If I could do it again I would have gotten the 32gb so she could install any app she wants without worry.

I got 32GB version. Had 16GB last generation, and trust me, it goes away very fast, especially if you game a lot. 16GB will leave about 14GB usable, and with 3 Infinity Blade games, I'd bet anything you'd have at most about 9GB left for everything else.

Also get LTE. Aside from cellular modem, it has a GPS chip. GPS is useful for quickly locating random places that you never thought to visit before, and it's especially useful if you commute a lot. Cellular modem is a no-brainer. A tablet without internet is a dead tablet.

I am getting the 16 GB + LTE version. I havent had a problem with space yet. We will see what happens when I have LTE all the time.

32GB WiFi+4G Verizon. Here's my thinking:

1) Size - Was constantly filling up my 16GB WiFi iPad 2, so Retina graphics will tip over that line.
2) WiFi+4G (Verizon) - The iPad has a larger battery and better antenna arrangement for tethering compared to a smartphone (which really does need to last all day), plus Verizon is throwing in tethering for free on all of it's data plans.

What??? Link...

If I was getting one, Id get the wifi one. I perfer not to spend extra money on another data plan when I already have a LTE phone to tether.

To be fair I am a neat freak and if I don't use an app I uninstall it. The only apps I had on my iPad were GTA, Pocket Legends, and a couple of other Apps/Books.
