I'm for the Death Penalty because we shouldn't have to waste tax dollars on scumbags like this who have been convicted of the crime and are obviously guilty. What's the point in keeping them locked up for life? It's a waste of money.

Man, that's a tough one. After Earl Washington was set free yesterday I have to rethink my opinion.

For.
What's the point of keeping scumbags alive in a jail who have commited such hideous crimes that deserve it?

I am against the death penalty. Capital punishment (death penalty) is inhumane and disgusting, and is not used in many countries even though many states here in the US still use it. The purpose of a prison term is really supposed to be rehabilitation, not punishment. The idea is to rehabilitate the prisoner so that he/she can someday become a contributing member of society again. There are some people that can not be rehabilitated for various reasons, that is what a life sentence is supposed to be used for.

I am not a criminal lover, and have no problem locking someone up forever if the crime is that deserving. However, are we people or animals? Lock someone up for ever, but do not take away life, it is not a person's decision to fo such a thing. Capital punishment is supposed to be about killing someone because they cannot be rehabilitated, yet as implemented, it is more about revenge. And, that is why I do not support it. Just lock them up and throw away the key, but lets not make murderers out of ourselves.

Lastly, it costs more money to society to pursue the death penalty than to pursue a life sentence and pay for the cost of locking someone up for life. (At least that's what I have read, I don't have anything to support it.)

Lastly, the legal system is very far from perfect. To me, it is worth allowing many murderers to live (in prison for life) than to wrongfully execute just one innocent person.

So, flame me.

And for those of you who are against.. I have a feeling that at least some of you would feel a different way if your children, parents, siblings or dear friends were brutally raped, tortured, and killed by some inhuman monster.

Picture the scene discussed in "The Cell". A child molester gets released on a "technicality".

the parents of the little girl come home from work to find the released molester of their child sitting on the couch watching TV. With little Cindy sitting next to him.. having been ravaged and raped, gutted open like a fish, blood everywhere, various internal organs strewn about the floor. Her little eyes still open, glossed over, staring off into nothingness with her final look of horror on her face. They find her heart cut out and put in the freezer.. apparently he thought they would want to keep that.

Now picture your own daughter like that. What would you want to happen to the animal?

If you can honestly say you wouldn't want him dead, but just slapped on the wrist and put into a "resort" for the rest of his life, or perhaps only for 15 years before parole.. or maybe he was "crazy" so they put him in a hospital for a year, to be released again to hunt down your other daughter.. if you can honestly say that you wouldn't want him dead...

then something is seriously wrong with you.

Kill the fu*ers.

I agree,

The ones where it's not a unanimous vote I guess should have some time to appeal. But if the guy pleads Guilty for murdering people in the 1st degree, FRY Em'.

Also the one who is in a subway station and Guns down 12 people in front of 50 people, Inject!!

If he gets put away and faces 140 years in prison! WHY, What is that!! Put him in the microwave, he's not going to live for 140 years!

I am for it, but I feel that there should be big changes in the way we do things.

For one, I think jurors should be professionals who have been trained in the law.... a jury of 'peers' usually amounts to a bunch of idiots.

I saw a documentary on jurors who were getting stoned at recess. Hooray!

I think that the death penalty should remain but that reforms are clearly necessary. Too many people get away with murder and too many innocent people are convicted.

Time to improve things a bit.

I am opposed to it for the reason that the wish to see a murderer killed is the same wish the murderer felt when he murdered.

Oops, I didn't state why.

Because at present, it is a deterent to crime.

I would hope that eventually, it would not be necessary.

BTW... Moonbeam, you almost made me feel guilty. Actually, I agree to some degree (having studied psychology/sociology) but I just don't see our society as ready to graduate to that level yet. In a few decades, maybe.

Isla what makes you think it is a deterrent. Everything I've ever read has been the opposite. I've always read that it's not a deterrent because murderers never think they're going to get caught so the punishment doesn't matter. I used to be in Amnesty International and the death penalty is one of the campaigns that people from other countries are working on in the US. In all the studies in their literature they found no correlation between the amount of murders and whether or not their is capital punishment. Have you read something else?

I can guarantee that the scumbag who gets fried will be deterred.

Beyond that, we have no way of knowing if it is a deterrent. We hardly even use it. We have about 20,000 homicides a year, and less then a hundred of the perps get toasted. When factoring in all considerations, the odds of being executed for murder approximate those of winning the lotto.

Make it CERTAIN, you bet your ass it will become a deterrent.

Take your pick.

I think there should be reforms, but as long as our society produces the grotesquely sick and evil minds that can ravage the innocent, I am for putting them out of their (and our) misery.

It would be nice if it could be abolished one day, just like it would be nice if there was no need for abortions one day.

I'd love to live in a perfect world.

Isla, I did feel guilty with my post following yours so closly. You do have a more utilitarian than vengeful approach though. Another aspect that remains invisible to most is that the loathing we are capable of is the loathing we feel for ourselves. The more we can be compasionate to all things the easier it will be to undo our self hate.

But how could we do that without risking executing innocent people? We have already showed that we could convict and execute innocent people, what will prevent us from doing it in the future, especially with a much more rushed approach. Is it that you are willing to accept them as casualties in the fight for revenge or do you believe that our legal system, can't make mistakes(OJ Simpson)?

[edit]I'm off to study so no more anandtech for me tonight. I didn't mean for that last sentence to sound so attacking Russ(although I'm sure I didn't hurt any feelings), just curious what you think.[/edit]
