no ifs, ands or buts about it.

But, what if you are calling 911 or emergency services to report an accident?

Oh ATOT, you're so full of douchebags...

when you say douchebags, you must be referring to teh 20% that think it's ok to allow texting while driving, despite studies that have shown it to be worse than DUI.

You didn't provide an option for "talking should be allowed but texting should not," so many of those people actually don't think texting should be allowed but didn't have an option in your retarded poll.

Yes, I'm for banning texting while driving. In fact, I'm for banning talking on a cell phone in any way while driving.

What if the phone is disconnected?

What if it isn't a phone, but just some similar gadget?

Yeah, what if I'm playing my DS while I'm driving?

can we first prove that texting increases accidently by a statistically significant margain?

only 9 to 17 times WORSE than being legally drunk, depending on whether you're reading or sending.

Text
Text

The results:

* Unimpaired: .54 seconds to brake
* Legally drunk: add 4 feet
* Reading e-mail: add 36 feet
* Sending a text: add 70 feet

Are these numbers from people not paying any attention to the road and staring at the phone only? I can touch type perfectly fine on my phone. I would imagine while driving and texting it would increase my stopping distance, no way in hell it would be 70 feet though. I think even 5 feet extra would be a stretch. BTW I've never read a text while driving, and I've never looked at my screen while texting while driving.

All I have to say here is, some people can't walk and chew gum at the same time. There's a huge difference between a person with their eyes glued to the screen of their black berry while driving. And a person who's using 1 hand to text while never taking their eyes off the road.

Too hard to enforce.

If somebody gets into an accident or something then they should check the phone record to see if they were texting and at that time charge them with reckless driving.

so what if my friend had my phone and was texting?

You will never be able to enforce this, good luck trying.

It's certainly not foolproof, but probably 70% of the cars on the road at any given time have just 1 person inside of them commuting to/from work .... so the majority may not have that alibi.

I don't mind and would be okay with STATES outlawing texting while driving. While it may be hard to enforce I think it is okay to have on the books in case an accident did occur and it could be proven that it was tied to texting then some extra damages can be levied against the dipshit driver.

I emphasize states above because I can not stand the federal government essentially blackmailing states to do their (i.e. federal) government's bidding. That pisses me the hell off.

In California, the talking-on-a-cell $35 ticket ends up costing $135 after adding all the fees. It only goes up with repeat offenders.

You text while driving, but you don't read texts while driving?

my phone can read texts out loud, so I have no need to even look at the screen. And sometimes I'd just send a text to say 'I'm on the 91 and will be there in an hour" not expecting a response.

Here on Oahu (City and County of Honolulu) we already have a complete ban on cellphone use while operating a vehicle (including in a parked turned off car with the keys in the ignition). it sucks, but I think it's safer.

Dr Pizza's point about CB's is valid. They are no more distracting than a cell phone, or the radio (mine has a remote control), or the heater vent... we already have laws to protect us from unsafe driving.

Cell phones deserve no special attention.

difference is no one takes 5 seconds to screw with the heater vent but they'll yap on their phones for their whole 20 mile commute.

No bluetooth headsets allowed?

Both eyes on the road. Both hands on the steering wheel. Learn it, live it.

Texting while driving, however, is NOT fine in any way.

disagreed,
attention is diverted regardless if you're using a hands free headset or not.

yup.
i love it when people make absurd comparisons like changing a radio station. it does not require the same attention as it does to text or have a phone conversation.

notice that none of them have come back and responded after i shot them down by saying show me a study that proves that adjusting the radio station is as dangerous as a DUI.

What if the person is changing stations a lot, and has a touch screen head unit without physical buttons. My friend is constantly looking at the deck to see what he's doing when he's changing stations. I'd estimate 1 song is the longest he goes without flipping to a new station. You're telling me this requires less attention than me texting without even looking at my phone ever? hummm...

Getting caught texting while driving should result in a 1 year suspension for the first offense. Maybe add in a $1000 fine to make sure the idiot gets the point.
