people from other cultures actually get really offended if you ask them and then don't want to hear the answer....

NEVER EVER ask that. I compare that to looking underneath a big rock in the forest. You never know what you're going to find, but it's usually not pleasent.
 
Why even ask? Chances are you will get the same response every time, plus let's be honest, how many people really care? 😉
