A French family visiting America was having dinner together in an upscale restaurant. The father ordered a glass of wine for his 16 year old son. The waiter told him he couldn't.

The father, confused, said, "But I'm his father."

So, in this one instance, which country allows more personal freedom, France or America?

In this one instance, which country sticks its intrusive, personal freedom denying, nanny-state snout into a family's personal business more, France or America?

In that one instance above
, that is.

Now, in this Phillies ballpark video, the kid is much younger, true.

So, tell me, Mr. Manly Defender of Freedom with a side of Freedom Fries to go, at what age are you OK with the STATE telling a father he can't allow his own son to have a couple of swigs on his beer or a glass of wine in an upscale restaurant?

Remember, psychological studies consistently show that introducing alcohol in responsibly small amounts under adult supervision tends to remove the ZOMG allure of it and leads to LESS destructive and dangerous binge drinking later on.

This video may not necessarily be portraying that (introducing alcohol in responsibly small amounts under adult supervision), though.

This guy in the video may just be getting his young son drunk so he can ah heck him in the men's room during the seventh inning stretch, it's true, we don't know. D:

Or, he may just be a slacker who doesn't even know his son is not only stealing his beer but has already stolen his car keys and intends to drive them home, incredibly underage and amazingly, on less than 1/4 of a beer, drunk. :hmm:

It's just a short video, taken out of context, and without knowing, we ALL see what we want to see.

But mostly what I see is just another opportunity for ZOMG FAUX OUTRAGE from a large group of willing and eager "freedom" and "small government" hypocrites.

Or maybe you just see what you want to and fail to note this is just drama drummed up by a station clamoring for attention?

No "or" pertains. That is exactly what happened. The station did so in precisely in order to cater to this particular quadrant of the lowest common denominator, as I noted:

They're the slavering dogs, the station merely played Pavlov's bell.

Just wanted to say that the guy who vomited on the girl was from New Jersey. Carry on, haters.

QFT. The entire post.

First generation perspective here, but my folks are Italian. I was drinking wine as far back as I can remember - usually mixed with some ginger ale as a kid. Nobody set the bottle down in front of me and let me go nuts, but I was always allowed a little bit. It's part of our food, part of our culture. Hell, my grandma would insist on pouring me half a beer when we had pizza, because the two had to be eaten together.

As I got older, alcohol was never a big deal. I knew not to drink too much, enjoyed what I had, didn't drive, etc. Because that's how I saw my parents do it and they let me join them, with limits. As a result, there was never any mystery and I never went nuts on booze.

And don't pretend like you never swiped a sip of your dad's beer. I have a hard time believing we all didn't try that every now and again.
