I've saved resources most of my life. I use CFLs wherever they're practical - places where the lights will be on a long time. Places like storage rooms and closets get incandescents, because they're only on for a few minutes at most, and usually only for several seconds.
My living room uses "bulbs" like these. Lots of light for not so much power. If it was my building, I'd just install fixtures for T8 fluorescent tubes. The livingroom doesn't have any permanent lighting, for whatever reason. It's all provided by floor lamps.

I turn off lights when I'm not using the room, and my PC stays off when I'm not home or awake. I do have an ancient washing machine (older than me) but that's because it's my landlord's, not mine. No dishwasher, though I'd love to have one. I do sometimes leave the water run while I'm brushing my teeth, but that's only to get the hot water flowing to that end of the apartment so I can take a shower. I also use reusable bags for shopping. My mom makes very nice tote bags out of old clothing. These things are strong, and can hold at least as much as a paper grocery bag. I also get the family discount - free.

No I just hate when someone reads or hears about something that's sweeping the nation and starts doing it, especially when the use the fucking catchphrase.

I hate it when someone automatically assumes that one is not already conscious about the environment. Just because I used the phrase means nothing. I'm from a city that has always been aware of the environment that we live in and has always done what we could to help it.

no no he is right. fuck this going green shit. everyone should fire up the old coal burner int eh basement (what you don't have one?) and get in the huge SUV, leave on all electronic devices jus so they don't start doign it because he don't like it.


as for us we recycle everything we can, feed leftovers to the animals (know a few farmers who will throw it ot the animals), try to keep burning of leaves to a minimum (live in the country) with compost pile and changed all lights to high efficiency ones.

Also we are in the process of swapping out the old crappy windows with some good ones. Already swapped out the furnace with a high effiency one (have noticed a big drop in propane use!).

Some of the things I do may appear to be "green" but they are just to "save money."

I use those CFL vs incandessants because it saves me money.
I go with energy efficient appliances since they save me money.
I keep the house at 64 degrees in the Winter because it saves money.

my company is pushogn everyone to go green (after all, we are an enviromental firm). NO one is really biting though. We are trying to limit the number of paper cups used.....that's not really working. We are trying to have peopel carpool, that is not working. I want to bike to work, but @ 16-20 miles....I do not think so.

I would take the train to work, but that would require me to take the train to boston and take another train outbound to my job.....That is a 2 hour process for a commute that take 20 minutes by car.

It's not a "bandwagon". The entire "Go Green" concept should be considered a lifestyle change for all people on this planet who want to keep living here, and your children's children to also. To answer question...Yes. On top of recycling as much as possible since I knew what it was, I've also been turning off my computer and appliances that just sit and do nothing while were not home, busy, or sleeping. The result is a much lower electric bill, which is what I can do to help. I also have improved my driving habits by not speeding as much, no more jack rabbit starts, and letting the car coast whenever possible. The result is better gas mileage and less stress on my part. I'm a field tech and drive all day for work, so I hope this will help in the long run.

There is no way in hell that a 21" CRT is sucking up 4-5 amps. Its heat output would be rediculous. It may have a startup power draw of 4-5 amps, but there is no way that's its continuous power usage.

i used to run dual 21 in CRTs in the winter i didnt need to have the heat on in my room, they DO use that much power and have an insane heat output
