Are you considered the "IT" guy around your friends and family?

Are you considered the "IT" fix it guy around your friends and families?

It used to be that I was. Then I just got tired of it. Now I don't mention anything about my computer related skills to anyone (other then potential employers). If someone complains about a problem, I go "sorry to hear that" and move on.

Unfortunately, yes. Apparently, to the uninformed, everyone who knows anything about computers should be able to fix ANYTHING that has to do with computers.

I sooooo am. And I am not even that good at it compared to many of the ppl here... but compared to them, I am a genius.

🙁 they drive me crazy.

I get out of it easy. I'm a unix admin, none of my family run unix so I send them to my cousin who is a windows guy.

In total I've spent many hours on the phone giving tech support to my parents, but I owe them a lot so I don't complain.

my parents don't want me to touch their computer.

they say I might break something.

*shrug*

my sister does call me for tech support when her computer crashes though. Can't really say no to her

For things in my own house, of course. For family members who don't currently live in the same house, yes, but they've always been bitchy about the free service that they would otherwise have to pay quite a bit more for elsewhere. They call and have something that needs to be fixed, but I have bills to pay. Because of some health related issues over the past two months, income is significantly decreased to an almost desperate level and they still bitch that I don't drop my paying job and rush over there to fix their sh|t for free.

I was :frown: about it until I started saying that I was too busy only to get the "we'll pay you" response. Now I'm 🙂 that the time I take to help my family with IT isn't being wasted when I could be spending that time in other more financially responsible situations. It's not so much the money as it is the acknowledgement by family members that my efforts really are appreciated other than "thanks, see you next time." Because money is involved, they also no longer demand my immediate attention and throw a fit when I can't drop whatever I'm doing and rush over there. 🙂

I don't mind helping my parents and my friends sometimes. I just hate when I have to fix the same thing over and over again. Or when I have to teach my mom how to use excel. EXCEL IS NOT HARD.

Definitely. My parents have gotten a little better over the years but my in-laws/some friends/sister, are complete idiots and they make no effort to learn anything. What I hate the most is when someone I've met once approaches me at a gathering with some lame ass virus/spyware/windows won't boot question.
