I just got my best time ever on puzzle #2,612,101,056 (easy) at www.websudoku.com

My time was 3:34

I am wondering if this is like Rubik's cube where some small portion of the population can solve it in no time all...

while some of it is skill....a LOT of solving these puzzles is a matter of seeing the right thing at the right time. THere are so many numbers and possibilities, you could go through 99/100 until you find that ONE to unlock the rest. There is really not much skill involved other than knowing the stratigies to "unlock" numbers
By that logic, I could read a few books and play grandmaster level chess.

I dont follow.....chess actually has moves and counter-moves...youd have to compute all the possibilites...with sudoku its just a matter of catching the right thing at the right time...theres no true skill to it on the hard ones

I've never tried these before but might be interested, I have just never been taught the right way to go about it...anyone want to point me to the general strategy of solving these things?

an easy start would probably be to write the numbers possible for each row/column and cross off as you play them, but I haven't done one yet and don't plan to either (unless i have way too much free time)

why is Sudoku so popular now? i never heard about it until a month ago and now everyone is playing it, wtf?

It's a logic puzzle.

All you do is determine what can or cannot be in a particular spot. when you narrow it down to "it can only be this number" you fill that in. The more numbers you fill in the easier it gets.
