Are you annoyed by tailgaters? What are your reactions?

Ever piss off a tailgater trying to pass you? I do this all the time. Sometimes when a tailgater decides to pass, i'll give my 250hp legacy GT full throttle and then cut in front of him. Other times, ill let him pass, hunt his ass down, and then cut him off hard with half a car length or less of distance between us. And when i say "cut off" i mean it...i switch lanes quickly and decisively and sometimes apply a little brake afterwards to wake that little tailgater up!

Anyone here stick it to the tailgaters?

This was not the type of tailgating that I was thinking about when I entered the thread.

Agreed. If they're pissing you off, just let them pass and then flash them with your highbeams a few times. Don't endanger yourself, the tailgater, and others on the road by trying to retaliate...who's to say said tailgater won't spaz out, slam on the brakes, swerve into the median, and take out the next four cars behind them?

If someone is tailgating me and I'm doing my usual 5+ or so over the limit, and they aren't letting up or going around me, I just take my foot off the gas. This works best on a 1 lane road, they back so far up they think you're nuts or something.

I usually let people go around me if I can but if people are being an ass I just move over to the shoulder a bit and kick up some gravel or run the winshield wipers a bit

i just slow down. i figure they want to pass and maybe i am going to fast for them to pass safely. so i continue to slow down until I'm going slow enough for them to pass.

heh reminds me.

yesterday i was heading to the butcher shop to pick up some steaks. i was getting tailgated. we came to a turn and there was a lady walking in the cross walk (she had the light) so i stopped to wait for her to pass. the idiot behind me starts honking like mad and flipping me off. when the women got across the street i went. well behind the idiot was a cop. all i see is the lights flashing as i drove away.

heh

I could see being annoyed by a tailgater on a one-lane road, but why not just let them pass if it's two- or more lanes? It's not exactly your job to decide how fast other people should be driving; let them be stupid on their own, and deal with the potential consequences.

I dont bother ppl trying to pass. If I am not going fast enough and it is safe to do so, I move over and let him go.

I don't feel the need to prove how tough I am by messing with total strangers on the road.

I am very rarely tailgated, though. I don't fall asleep in the passing lane.

I do let them. It's 3 lanes on the highway here and they still feel a need to drive up my ass. I'm in the far right lane, and they still do it. If they wanna do that, then my foot goes off the pedal. It's not like im sitting in the passing lane doing this.

Gotchya. Then yeah, I'd be annoyed, too. I can see if someone is getting irritated with a driver who's not using the passing lane(s) to pass, but if you're tailgating in the right lane, then you just need to stop driving altogether.

I just keep going at whatever speed I'm going, and if the road turns into a two lane, I get into the slower lane until they pass.

Sounds like you have a bit of a road rage problem.

I usually go 5 - 10 over the limit almost everywhere except 25mph zones, parking lots, weather, and special zones. Haven't really have anyone tailgating me in a while, because to me tailgating means he/she is on my butt for more than 15 seconds.
On a 2 way highway I will speed up if they push me since I don't mind it, unless it is 15 over. After that i'll let them pass.

Ahh, so you're a textbook example of road rage, plus what you're doing is illegal?

For me, it depends on why I'm being tailgated. If I misjudged the speed of an oncoming car and pulled out in front of him, only to discover he was going 15mph over the speed limit, I'll go as fast as I dare (usually 9 over) until there's a place for him to pass. My goal isn't to piss off other drivers after I've already done something discourteous. But, if I'm already going fast and they catch up to me out of nowhere, I'll end up slowing down a bit, but never down to the posted limit... ie. if I'm in a 55 going 63, I might slow down to 58 or 59, especially to increase the stopping distance between me and the car in front of me... for my own safety. I don't need to be rear-ended in the event that I have to perform a quick stop because of a car in front of me.

Tailgating isn't really an issue for me, I'm not a particularly slow driver and I keep to the right unless I'm passing someone.

I just go the same speed I am going.

(okay, maybe sometimes I will slow down to the exact speed limit and hope they will pass me)

If somsone is tailgating me just to be an ass, then I just slow down to exactly the speed limit. THen when they try to go around me I sped back up to my normal 8-9 over. Otherwise I just ignore them completely.

But if they are tailgating you, that means they are going faster than you and you should be in the right lane since you are the Slower Traffic. Unless it's a one lane (each direction) road. THen they can pass you if you wan't going fast enough.
