Here is a challenge for you network gurus. I'm currently in Minneapolis and unable to resolve the URL: phoenixpubliclibrary.org to an IP. I contacted their tech support through whois and they are have no problems connecting thru their url nor reported issues by their vast number of local users.

My ISP is Comcast and they too cannot make the connection. And BTW they tried a computer not inside the comcast network.

Now I hate to sound paranoid but this is the only URL I cannot resolve. This is not to say that I have tried every other URL on the planet, just the only one that fails for my daily use.

Considering all the internet attacks happening I'm wondering if this is a symptom of a broader problem.

If you can figure out what the issue is please do. It's beyond my skills to tackle.
Lastly, Comcast has a ticket on this problem which they say they will address within about 72 hours.

I included a poll to see how broad this problem is. If you'd like post your region along with whether or not you can get to that site.

I'm fine here in CT using AT&T's local DNS servers. Resolves to 148.167.132.131 without a problem.

Bupkus - what do you get at a cmd prompt if you type "nslookup phoenixpubliclibrary.org"?

It sounds like the DNS server you're using just doesn't have a record (or a valid record) for that host.

Also, if phoenixpubliclibrary.org resolves to an IP when you perform the nslookup, then you should do a tracert and see if there's a problem at some Router between you and the host.

A key point is whether "phoenixpubliclibrary.org" is being resolved by the O.P. I get 148.167.132.131.
If it's not being resolved, then it's a DNS issue. If it IS being resolved, but the O.P. can't bring up the web site, then there's a router or a firewall problem between the O.P. and that web host.

And, yeah, I'm in Phoenix and Cox and I get both name resolution and the web site just fine. The site doesn't answer pings, but the web response is fine.

I just reconnected my router so I don't know if that could be a problem for for nslookup, but...
I get:
Server: my_router
Address: 192.168.1.1

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds

*** Request to my_router timed-out

Just to add, this problem is the same whether my router is connected or not.

I should add that before I tested my router as the source of the issue I had both a Windows 7 box and a Ubuntu 9.10 box and both could not bring up the page.

You're having a DNS problem. The DNS Server on your Router is not responding to your nslookup requests. I can't tell you whether it's because your Router has a problem or because it's not getting a response from its upstream DNS Server (i.e. the DNS Server provided by your ISP)...maybe someone else can comment on that. But you absolutely have an DNS problem.

If I enter the IP I get a website, not the home page from the library but the hosting page with Apache Tomcat.

Since I have the IPs of my 2 DNS servers can I test them directly for phoenixpubliclibrary.org?

Wow...so the administration interface on that website is wide open to the public. Whoever is the Host/Webmaster has some securing to do. I know you need a username/password to access it, but it definitely shouldn't let someone from the outside at all.

No, it's just the default page Apache gives when you don't provide a URL.

Lastly, I cannot ping phoenixpubliclibrary.org

The host does not respond to pings.

And if you're not resolving an IP from your DNS server, then your ping has no where to go.

Since I have the IPs of my 2 DNS servers can I test them directly for phoenixpubliclibrary.org

You can go into the properties of the network connection on your PC and put anything you want as a DNS server, instead of having DHCP assign your router as your DNS server. for example, you can try putting in 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 fro your primary and secondary servers. After you make that change, see if you can resolve an IP using nslookup.

OK, so you have a name resolution problem, at least for "phoenixpubliclibrary.org". That needs to be fixed. Do you have name resolution for ANY other Internet sites? What does an "NSLookup Yahoo.com" give you?

No, it's just the default page Apache gives when you don't provide a URL.

But is that a good thing? I would think you would only want that page to be displayed if you're accessing the web server from the LAN.
