When I ask to plug the cable modem directly into the laptop, would you plug the laptop into the docking station and plug the ethernet into the docking station? No. Now he has to waste MORE of my time by undocking it, installing a NIC, rebooting, etc. That would explain two "Local Area Connections" listed in the Network Places list.

And, when ipconfig (Win2kPro) says "media disconnected" and I ask you to check the connections, do you argue with me saying that you know the ethernet is connected because you just plugged the laptop into the docking station? No.

:|

Some people don't deserve too have computers, much less a laptop, much less a Win2k Pro laptop with full docking station and extra monitor with external mouse and keyboard.

explain to him that the next step is to pack up the computer and send it back..because he shouldn't be allowed to own one

i remember when i was telling a student over the phone to UNPLUG the computer from the wall (to reset it)...and she REFUSED to understand what i meant, and INSISTED that i come over and do it (i have that option at my disposal here at school tech support, so i DON'T have to do it purely over the phone thank goodness)

so i go up to her room, walk over to the wall, and unplug it from the wall. she stares at me blankely and goes "OHHHHH, THAT'S what you meant"

Now, 19.5 minutes into the call and 11 minutes after asking him to remove the lappy from the docking station, I asked him how things were going (he's been mumbling and working in the background all this time), he says that he's got the laptop removed from the docking station and it's rebooting. WTF. 11 minutes!? 11 EFFING MINUTES!!

If it's one thing this job has taught me, it's how to keep my temper when I absolutely need to (hehe) and patience. Too bad I don't use those much in real life with some situations that I should probably use them in.

Hey FFM, you wouldn't happen to know how to get rid of that "media disconnected" message in Win2k Pro, would ya? I hate that! I've tried solving the problem here but I'm not quite sure anymore if it works. At least the icon in the system tray still shows up.

Other than actually having the ethernet plugged in and reinstalling the drivers for your NIC, I don't know why the message would keep showing up.

When I did tech support, I absolutely hated holding some peoples hands through everything, but sometimes it must be done :( If he shuts it down correctly, make sure you tell him "good job"

This guy now has his NIC installed and cable modem directly connected. But, he can't get the computer to recognize that the card sees ethernet connected to it. All his connections are disabled and he can't get them enabled. They keep defaulting back to disabled. Either this guy is smoking crack or his computer is eff'd up. And, right now, I'm too frustrated to think straight or to deal with him anymore.

Maybe the NIC is bad? I don't care.
Maybe the lappy is bad? I don't care.
Maybe the ethernet cable is bad? I don't care.

Tell him to shut down his computer, take the power out of it and let it sit for a minute. Reboot without the nic, then reboot again with the nic in it.

Usually Win2k will clear up any sh!t you started if you do this.

actually, that's the crappy part. she WAS pretty hot, BUT, she became known as my ARCH-NEMESIS

she must have had a hundred stupid problems like that over the course of the semester, yet she had a really crappy attitude towards it, yet i ALWAYS seemed to be working when she had problems!!

grrrrr...

sometimes attitude counts for more than looks! (sometimes) heheh

Too late. We're ending the call. He knows what needs to be done, and is only arguing. We can't give tech support without the modem directly connected. He is saying that he's gotten support many times before with the lappy into the docking station and it's never been a problem. Either 1) he's lying or 2) he lied to all the other technicians when they went through standard opperating proceedure asking if he had the modem directly connected to the computer.

True, but unless I can handle the stress, I'll be out of a job anyway. Doing this kind of thing was typical on my school's network but I wasn't dealing with shear dumbasses.

the best problem I have encountered so far was when my friend got his new computer, and set it up and all. Bout a half hour later, I get a call. He said his monitor wasnt working, and it was plugged into the computer, ect, ect. I asked if it was plugged into the socket. Problem Solved. I laughed at him for an hour.

Had to do a simiar thing earlier today - had to go all the way accross campus (they were on like the exact opposite side of campus) in the rain to tell them if they had norton on their computer (they refused to do anything over the phone).

Altough I have yet to use the remote administration on XP and don't know what all it is capable of, it's small software problems like this that will make it the lives of folks in tech support a whole lot better. Instead of trying to get a person to tell you what's on the screen, you just connect in, fix whatever the hell is wrong with "my internet" and be on your merry way. VNC could do the same thing, but not everyone has VNC. When XP is on more an more desktops, hopefully that remote admin tool will become more useful.

**i put myself on hold while i laugh so hard everyone stares at me**

this is the stupidity i put up with everyday.

I'm looking forward to the days of XP for that reason as well, except you will still need to help them send you a help request.

I like to make up new techno-sounding words and teach them to the most arrogant people who insist they know what they are doing--

Hopefully, they pass them on ;)
