Are you a member of the "self-esteem generation"?

If so, what do you think about it and how did it impact you? Seems to me the folks who were raised with such an emphasis on self-esteem seem to have a higher depression rate.

I didn't realize there was a "self esteem" generation. What happened to the letters?😕 I was raised to have confidence, not be cocky and not give a fvck what other people think. No depression. I get bummed sometimes but nothing clinical. It is usually cause other people don't give me much faith in the race I am trying to keep alive.

wtf is the self-esteem generation?

The generation of kids who went to schools where teachers gave them C's for not following homework directions, just because they "tried" and because they're "special". You don't remember the whole movement where the kids' self-esteem was the all-important factor in raising them right?

I don't know, maybe?

I'm out going, I don't give a fvck what others thing of me, I'm an asshole, I'm a cynic, I'm funny (looking), and I just generally try to enjoy life and have a good time. I think that's why I hate a lot of people my age, because they think everything we do socially matters right now and take it so fvcking seriously, and they buy into whatever gets them noticed.

Dumbasses.

They still pull that shit, even in today's schools.

Now the kids who don't take honors classes and AP classes get special recognition if they get good grades, because they complained that honors kids always have the highest GPAs. Yeah, like we don't fvcking work our asses off to get the grades we get. It pisses me off, because if you're getting 100%+ in any class, you should be in the advanced version of it, not pissing your pants because you're not getting specially recognized for acing a class that morons can ace.

this is a problem that will correct itself in the near future as life gets harder. we're too tolerant of bullsh!t today, but it will change

I thought it was a relatively new thing (no red ink, no dodge ball, etc.). Nothing like that in my school.

no red ink! it hurts my feelings...🙁

See, somebody knows what I'm talking about....

my childrens teachers use all different colors (i think whatever is handy they use, personally). i asked them did it matter what color ink their papers were marked in, and they said they didnt care, but red made the most impression/stood out more. i then explained the whole red ink situation to them, and even they recognized it was stupid. they made the remark that they prefer red, because they want it to stand out and know what they missed so they can fix it.

so simple a child can understand, yet some parents make the mountain from the molehill.

I'm not sure what the self-esteem generation is. I think most people get the most encouragement from teachers/parents during elementary school, and then get less in middle and high school. There are a few people (generally upper-middle class) that are constantly told everything they do is great, and I think they're the exception. Usually you see these people as rejects on American Idol.

I'm from europe, born and grew up in the commie regime. I dont remeber self estreem having any role in the way i was raised and educated. And no i never get depressed.

i alternate between periods of utter brillance and laziness. the only thing holding my self esteem together is the few brillant parts of my life.

I went to catholic schools from k-12 so instead of giving C's they just beat the piss out of you. I never heard of this "self-esteem generation" before. What time frame does this generation fit into?

I'm not exactly sure. Early 90s to now, maybe?
