My Yamaha 4416 hasn't produced a single coaster.. except for maybe that time my PCI was overclocked to 44Mhz and malfuntioned my SCSI adapter ;)

Yamaha 4416 scsi on a Asus SC875 card.

Worst thing I ever got. Had the drive in for repair 3 times, they "upgraded" me to the 6416 the third time, but I still had problems. Coasters, random lockups of the drive, and slow writes when it did work,...

My system was not OC'd, and has the latest drivers too.

Went up 2 months ago to Best Buy and got a 179 dollar Acer 8*4*32 IDE drive, burned 36 disks so far without a coster at 8x. It's not the fastest out there by far, but it does have an 8 meg buffer! I'm happy now :)

I have a 8x8x24 SCSI and have yet to make a bad disk. This is my 2nd Yamaha, my first was a 2x CDR and it still is working to this day.

Do a search for "burners" under the search tool.

You'll find Plextor and Yamaha are the favored brands as far as quality and speed.

I am pleased with my SCSI Yamaha 6416. I have tried pushing my luck while burning by downloading, listening to a CD in the CD-ROM, working in AutoCAD and printing photo-reproductions in the background. No coasters, no problems.

<< what about HP
they alright?

HPs are also great, but IMHO they're about #3 overall. I've heard some say they can't "overburn", which could be a problem for you. As for quality and support they are great, which is why they are so high in the rankings, and people love 'em.

Yamaha's are excellent.

I personally favour plextors but in my experience the Yamaha's are just as good, I just have a personal preference for plextor.

Plextor and Yamaha are definatley #1 and #2, I'd be hard pressed to decide which is which though.

I've also had good experiences with Ricoh, HP and Sony, and I've been told Teac are quite good, but none of these are as good as Plextor/Yamaha.
