Are wireless routers, wireless only, or do they still allow for connections with cat5 cable?

Title says it all, I want the flexibility of wireless, but I still want to be able to get the full speed of wired if I need it, is this possible. Also aside from the phsyical aspect do wireless and wired routers set up the same in software?
