Are wireless adapters cross vender compatible?

It may seem like a silly question considering they all are supposed to conform to the 802.11b (Thanks EUG) standard or whatnot. I was just wondering if you could say run a Linksys and DLink together in AdHoc mode or if someone could setup a Dlink WAP with WNICs from 3Com, Linksys, and DLink, or whomever together on a wireless workgroup?

The standard is 802.11b. They should work together, esp. if it's WiFi certified.

I use a Linksys router attached to a D-Link wireless access point with my Apple iBook laptop with Apple Airport card (which is Lucent). I used to use a D-Link wireless card in my PC laptop with this setup, until I sold the laptop.
