Can't say I've looked into this much, but I remember webcams always beign a very novel and fun idea, but would always suck on executions (very small, pixelated, and choppy video)

Are there any out there that actually transmit good video over the web?

same deal, superior image quality due to the actual vid camera (instead of a webcam)
image clarity/smoothness depends on your connection: my gf and I are both at 3mbit/256k and the experience is pretty good

Yep, I setup my brother-in-law to use the video camera for IM. Much cleaner video and higher res, 640x400 if I remember rightly.

many of the newer camcorders have USB streaming....so you install drivers, hookup the usb cable, and use them as webcams. I have a sony and it's great....no noise, great low light performance, etc.
