Rant:/ Take guys with red hair, how many do you know on TV or in movies? Not that many considering they make up something like %15 of the male population in this country. Why is that? Its because they are TV ugly, not because they can't act or lack anything needed other than looks to fill these roles. If you don't believe name off celebrities with red hair. Lemme know when you get past Seth Green and Conan O'Brien.

Oh and those of you who say that albino people are less prevalent, they only make up less that .01% of the population.

Survival of the fittest.

If you are ugly, you will be more likely to fail at life... that simple. If you are so emotionally unstable that you fail, because you are not as good looking as the TV supermodel, you need to end yourself and not pass on your genes.

If a lot of people behave in "real life" the way they do on these forums, then yes, I think society on the whole is obsessed with looks. But it's not one's own looks we're obsessed with, but rather, everyone else of the opposite gender. It's ok if we're fat and lazy, as long as our women are thin with big breasts and workout daily.

Yes we are... and the sad thing is, we are obsessed with artificial looks. Artificial is the key in the argument here, IMO.

You can be the most healthy, fit, balanced person in the world, but if you don't fit the current ideal image of 'beauty', you get devalued. And many UNHEALTHY people are considered beautiful even when they have done things like get fake breasts put in, pump up on steroids, or simply spend way too much time on what they look like/partying to think about the truly important things in life.

<--- healthy, fit, and all natural... and has also benefitted (and still benefits) from having 'good looks'.

Oh yeah, one more thing...

It's about artifical looks AND current cultural standards. Which of course, vary by culture.

I think some of the other countries have it worse when it comes to the obsession with physical looks.

we are very obsessed because the media, such as television, newspapers, and radio have put a lot of commercials put on by companies who make money on placing fears and messages in our minds. One of the strongest messages are:
"If you are old, you are ugly"
"If you are overweight, a little bit, then you are FAT"

Seriously just watch television commercials and look at all the advertisements that they have. That's the main reason why people are so concerned on their weith. As a society, there's no authority that promotes health, and good nutrition.
I'm not at all concerned with my weith. I don't even know what that is.

I've lost a significant amount of weight, so I don't feel sorry for anyone.
It's a simple matter of willpower... I don't feel sorry for heroin addicts either.

People are always going to be focused on and look up to beautiful people. It's natural. However, beauty is far from constant.

By artificial do you mean, a six pack? a slim waist line? big breasts? low fat %? Because although someone may cheat and get implants or use steroids, their end goal is still to look very healthy. Yea, they cheated, but the look itself, the actual act of having a sixpack, isn't artificial. The simple act of having nice breasts, isn't artificial.

Yes, you can be healthy and look healthy and still have an *average* body fat %, but that doesn't mean everyone with a lower BF% is artificial, it just means they spent that much more time looking better than you do. Or maybe it came natural.

The only artificial look that I know of is fashion supermodels who starve themselves and look anorexic. But they don't look healthy, they look anorexic and everyone knows it. The most beautiful women are still the fit healthy ones (who have a low BF% but are very tone and not anorexic).

Are you trying to imply that Eastern societies have no obsession with looks? You have a few million Korean and Japanese teenagers whom would probably think otherwise. I am sure you would find this 'affliction' worlwide, not just a western thing.
But, hey thanks for trying to debase western standards.

To give my somewhat serious answer I think it is an innate natural instinct. People have been trying to make themselves look better for hundreds of thousands of years. This is hardly a new phenomenon.

My cat grooms himself, does he have poor esteem?

By artificial, I mean gained by artificial means. That would be steriods, implants, drugs, lipo, etc. Going beyond what is natural into the realm of the cosmetically altered according to air brushed, digitally enhanced media standards.

Not sure what point you are trying to make, but hopefully I have clarified what I mean by 'artificial'.

Anyway, my nice breasts are natural and I've achieved my fit, toned body through natural means. :p And it didn't take anything other than regular, moderate exercise and a diet of natural, healthy foods (no Twinkies for me, yuck.). I'm 36 and get told regularly that I don't look a day over 26. But it's not because of anything other than being truly good to myself, taking care of myself and valuing my health. Strange, it's such a simple thing but so very hard for most of us to learn how to do. Love and value ourselves. Naturally. Huh.

But you know what the REALLY beautiful thing to me is? I'm not afraid of getting older and not fitting into the mold of what society deems 'beautiful' anymore. In that, every day is infinitely sweeter for me because I don't care if anyone thinks I am 'hot or not'. That is a truly powerful feeling. :)

Currently, there are over 2 times as many YES votes as NO votes. That's because this question is asked on ATOT where the population wants to be measured on their brain waves over their looks for obvious reasons. ;)

I don't think most males are obsessed with how they look, but are more obsessed about how their girlfriends look.

Its not about the fittest, more like social skills + networking skills + a degree ass kissing = sucuess.
Being liked as a person > being "fittest".

LOL, sorry Bumrush. I would, and I have in the past, but now that I've gone back to teaching, I can't afford to have my pics all over the 'Net. :p

One thing that I learned a long time ago came from an old song/ poem, and it has made a HUGE difference for me in worrying too much about what I look like compared to others.

From Desiderata:

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
