Comedian ‘Not Sorry’ for Pearl Harbor Joke on NBC’s New Year’s Eve Special

Leggero, Jane Lynch and Anthony Anderson were joking about a recent tweet by SpaghettiOs that many saw as an attempt to cash in on Pearl Harbor Day: “Take a moment to remember #PearlHarbor with us,” the canned food tweeted.

Quipped Lynch: “I’m offended because they were referring to SpaghettiOs as pasta.”

Added Leggero: “It sucks that the only survivors of Pearl Harbor are being mocked by the only food they can still chew

Some viewers expressed their offense on Twitter. Others contacted Leggero with threats. She wrote Friday that she was subjected to “creatively misspelled death threats, rape fantasies, and most of all repeated use of the the C word.”

“In the past few days I have been called a wise and beautiful woman so much I felt like I was in a British pub rooting for the wrong soccer team,” she wrote.

But she added that she didn’t see any point in apologizing.

“Do we really believe that the people who fought and defended our freedom against Nazis and the Axis powers will find a joke about SpaghettiOs too much to bear? Sorry, I have more respect for Veterans than to think their honor can be impugned by a glamorous, charming comedian in a fur hat,” she said, describing her New Year’s outfit.

“On the one hand you have me, making a joke about how old people can’t chew tough foods very well,” she said. “On the other hand you have Veterans who receive inadequate care upon their return from active duty, rampant sexual assault against female soldiers, staggering rates of suicide, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, substance abuse and depression among soldiers and political gridlock that prevents these problems from getting solved quickly.”

“Where do you think your outrage and action would be better served, calling me a wise and beautiful woman or doing something about the above problems?”

Good for her, she's right

I don't care if she declines to apologize, but the part saying people should be more upset about the treatment of veterans is a total non-sequitur and lame.

Just plain stupid and a waste of (fill in the blank).

And the answer to the OP's query is yes, I believe that we are getting too sensitive as a society ...

good for her! Ive been waiting for someone to just NOT apologize for a long time.

And yes, our society has become pussified. There has been many many posts on this topic over the years.

We are TOO politically correct to the point where it almost impossible to have an opinion anymore.

Oh quit whining, you pussy.

You have every right to have an opinion, just as others have every right to think your opinion sucks..

So let me get this straight. Making jokes about how old people can't chew food... bad.

Threatening to rape and kill someone... good

:confused::confused::confused:

Seems like the C word fits, what is the issue?

Are we supposed to be shocked that there are nuts in the world making nasty threats to public figures who say things targeted to get nuts to make nasty threats?

Comics are an easy target these days. The vast majority of people aren't offended by a joke. There is a very small minority that does get offended, and the internet makes it easier for them to organize a posse. The news catches wind of it, because Twitter is considered a credible source these days, and then blows it out of proportion. Thus allowing this small minority to dictate morality for the majority.

The whole irony here is they try and make a moral stance, by calling here a wise and beautiful woman and threatening to rape her. The very same folks who were probably roasting Daniel Tosh over a spit for making rape jokes. These people should be though of by the public for what they really are, loud mouthed busy bodies looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

I'm pretty easy when it comes to jokes, but I can understand some person on TV taking the piss out of war veterans hitting a nerve with some people. It doesn't offend me personally, but i guess if I went to war and saw my mates die I might not like jokes like that.

Everyone has a soft spot, no matter how "hard" you are there is always something someone can say to hit that nerve.

Lots of people in these very forums get offended easily and go running to the relevant authorities. As for the OP, I wonder if she was a man and refused to apologize...

people aren't happy unless theyre offended or outraged by something. anything.

sad but its true.

Like everyone in this thread who are offended that her tasteless and not very funny joke provoked an even more tasteless response! :p

I feel left out! :(

I guess I'll settle for being offended by those not offended enough to post about being offended that others were or were not offended. :colbert:

No, wait, I've got it: I'm offended by the c*ntification of America . . . by c*nts who make stupidly tasteless jokes and then get all offended that even bigger losers out there predictably react. These c*nts them scramble for the high ground and suddenly acquire a keen moral outrage at the disgraceful treatment of our veterans . . . yeah, right.
