Are we getting close to a DVD R/RW standard yet?

I want to get a drive at some point, but I am still afraid of the betamax/vhs disaster where everyone who got a beta was left out in the cold...

Wait until a standard has been created for either + or -

Either that wait until their are more drives that write and read both.

Also, CDRW's wont go any faster now, so wait a bit longer and youll find DVDR drives dropping in price.

Just go and buy one - REmember that in 2 years or so the price will drop so much you will probably replace the one you have because of the faster speeds anyway.

By the time they settle on a standard, blue laser DVD writters will be available.

Which incidentily also has competing formats.

Do what I did. I bought myself a Panasonic LF-311 so I can read/write DVD-RAM and DVD-R formats. Then I bought a DVD+R/W so I can read/write DVD+R/W and DVD+R.

The only thing I can't handle is DVD-R/W.

Why bother with a standard? Most dvd players play both DVD-R and DVD+R (newer set top players that is), all dvd-roms read both formats, and dvd-r's cost as little as 80 cents a pop now.. I'd say get a $180 dvd-r...

I second that vote to just go out and get one. It's really not like Beta/VHS scenario of long ago, because of reasons pointed out in this thread.

I got myself one of those Pioneer/Cendyne A05 4x DVD-RW drives and I couldn't be happier (about $170.00 AR). I have no compatibility probs with my puters or stand alone DVD players. I'd say just go for it and enjoy it now.

Not only that but Betamax remains the superior format and the professional standard. So get what works for you unless you really think you will need to be trading pr0n, er, I mean content with other people and can wait on a consumer mainstream standard. In any case, the content can always be transferred to another storage format and since we're talking digital there shan't be any loss in information or quality anyway.

If I went out and got one I'd get a +R because it seems to have slightly ( more features

but aside that huge arguement alone in two years we are going to have 60 dollar DVD burners anyways so go buy three and then remember how you forked over 200 dollars now
