We simply don't know really, but logic and common sense says that we are most likely not alone ion the scale of the entire universe.

It's basically incomprehensible. We're a speck in our own galaxy, and there are what... do we really even have a plausible estimate? Trillions?... of other galaxies?

haha.

Obviously less intelligent than we are? Obvious based on what? What's to say that they aren't responsible for at least one of the "UFOs"? Because we havn't spotted a radio signal from them in our "exhaustive" sweep of like 1% of the possible area on a very narrow frequency band? Because they havn't taken over yet? Because they aren't blowing us up? Because they havn't made active contact? What's to say there isn't some massive Star-Trek like Federation, and they're steering well clear of us until we're advanced enough to "get it"? What's to say that Gene Roddenberry wasn't one of them and was planted to get the idea of how they work into our heads so we don't freak out THAT badly if an accidental encounter occurs?

Because that's all idle specualtion. You have as much proof for that as you have for the existance of god.

A simple, rational, disinterested, analysis of the variables immediately reveals that we know way too little to make any educated guess. Anything else we say is, more or less, wishful thinking.

No, but they are going to keep on making us think we are... They sure as hell don't want to have anything to do with us.

Er, well, good point.

I guess I should have said ... obvious that they are most likely not intelligent on our scale?

lol

It sucks that our point of reference is so limited.

When was the first radio broadcast sent into space? How far away would it be by now?

humans have lived on this planet for 2mil yrs. he chance of Intelligent lifeforms living within this tiny, minute, snapshot of time (compared to the time the universe have been in existence) is extremely tiny. Maybe there was an intelligent group of dudes out there that lived 5 millions years ago, but their damn star exploded and all of them died. bummer. :(

Wouldn't that be a mindblower.

Except that all the variables in the drake equation are basically unknown. Put in one set of values and you get 10000 communicating civs. Put in another, equally reasonable set, and you get one.

Definately not. And I'm sure there's other intelligent life, too...probably more advanced than us considering how old the universe is.

As for why we haven't been actively contacted yet outside of a few sightings, think about this. If you were another race, an older one than humans, and came across earth and observed Humans for awhile...would -you- want to make contact? We backstab eachother, lots of us can't even accept other members of the species because of their physical features, we kill eachother day in and day out, much of the race (or atleast those in power) are very warlike, and the race has tons of other problems. Lots of us are shallow. We're more or less destroying our own planet and the other species on it in the names of science, conquest and industry. And hell if we don't have the most annoying, mind-grating advertising schemes. Lime Coke get off my TV!

Taking that into consideration, along with anything else you might see in your observations...would YOU want to make contact, open trade, share technology, or do anything else outside of observing more to see when we get a clue? :/

..so far all we know is there's lots of flying junk out there..look at all the impact craters on the moon.
