Are washers necessary with modern motherboards?

I'm putting my new system together and I've come to the part I always dread - mounting the motherboard.

I don't have a removable tray, so it's very, very difficult to install on the riser pins and keep the washers in place. But I seem to recall reading somewhere that the washers really aren't necessary. Is this true, and if not, are there any suggestions you might have? Should I break out the super glue?

I'm still trying to figure out a use for the mound of them that I never installed. Don't know why I can't throw them away. I keep thinking one day I'll need something and they'll be just the right thing.

Another "no washers" guy. Modern motherboards seem to do better at keeping the area around the holes free of surface traces. I suppose you could have problems if you used the wrong screws (ones with wider heads than the proper ones).

No washers here 🙂

it's not really that hard, just slip it in at and angle, line up the ports, push it in a little, and screw it in!

I like to bend the little metal thingy's on the face plate for the ports in a little so it doesn't push the MB over while i screw it in. You know what i'm talking about? There's gotta be a name for em. Anyway did i say you don't need washers? 😎

no washers... not for a few years now

i just try to stay on the metal circle or at least inside the white circle around it

I'm confused here, are the "washers" you all are speaking about plastic life savers? Is it to be confused with those little metal riser thingies, that raise the mb off the tray?

Yup, or as dictionary.com puts it: "A flat disk, as of metal, plastic, rubber, or leather, ..."

yeah you can go without the washers but erm i'd keep the risers in place or youll almost certainly have a dead mobo soon as you turn it on.

I build systems for a living, and do not use the washers.

John what is your occupation specifically?

I'm guessing you are A+ along with a few others..
PM would be best for that..
I'll use a (red felt paper looking types) washer if the screw(as in its edge) looks to be near a trace tho..otherwise..no washers

Very true,

Sorry John.

I guess I'm in the minority here.......ever since the 486 days I've been using
the washers. I haven't had any problems with them, but I have no
experience without them. My last Antec case did not come with them so
I went to my local Ace hardware and bought some.............Greg
