Are videogames getting too complicated?

Maybe I am just getting old, or maybe they really are just getting too complicated.. but it seems to me that now a days videogames are getting very complicated and take a whole lot longer to finish then the ones I used to play.

The latest Final Fantasy game or a game like Morrowind can take 80 hours of gameplay to finish.. these things seem more like life investments that you need to dedicate all of your time to as opposed to the simple fun they used to be back when I was little.

Does anyone else feel this way.. are games just getting too indepth for the casual gamer to play anymore?

I thought they got easier...some of them just have a crappy ending 🙁... but i think the choice of systems has gotten complicated though.

The two games you mentioned were specifically designed to take longer to finish because their fans expected it; they are more like novels you play through. There are plenty of shorter more mindless games, but they usually aren't RPGs. You should find an action game like Devil May Cry etc.

Soem games just go nowhere and its really hard to keep up. That is not the game being complicated, that is the game makers not knowing where they are leading you. i.e. bad design.

RPG's are supposed to be life investments. 😉

But there just dosent seem to be as many as those anymore.

Devil May Cry was awesome but for the most part it seems like games require a lot more effort..

It seems like it is getting harder to find something I can just play for a little while, walk away for a week, then come back and get right into it again with out having to remember where I was or what I was doing.

You should be like my friend. He is a beast at video games. We went to an arcade once and he got forth highest score the first time he played the game and then on his second try he got high score. Then one weekend he borrowed Zelda for N64 from me and beat the game in two days, and he got all the skultulas and all the hearts you can get.

Just wait until you play Knights of the Old Republic. 😉

i agree. back in the SNES days, you can just pick up most of any game, play for 15 minutes, save and then come back without a problem. now i feel like if i dont play a game for more than a few days, i'll come back lost as to what happened and what i need to do.

almost every genre of games has gotten a lot more complicated as designers try to out do each other in terms of originality. the increase in the amount of buttons on the controllers doesn't help either. nes had like 2 action buttons (not including start/select), now an xbox has like 10+ buttons (more if you include the directional pads as action buttons as some games use it as). remembering what does what is hard in itself 🙂

KOTOR isn't a short game 😉

too complicated? i dont know?

i find myself categorizing games now into two genres:

1.the ones i really really like

2.the rest i do not play

i cant deal with sitting thru a "pretty good" game anymore.

Pick up a Gameboy SP. I got burned out on the PS2 and Xbox so i picked up a GBASP so i could play it at work. All the games are very simple in design due to the limitations of the platform and are in my opinion alot of fun.

Sometimes you just aren't in the mood for a graphic novel or a FPS with 10 keys bound to one function.

I can agree with ncircle. I out grew most of the mindless crap games. It takes months for a game to come out that I actually enjoy.

Games like "No One Lives Forever" or Battle Field 1942 don't interest me with their high public ratings.

I want realism and simplicity in design. Not over complex , over done, and outrageous games.

I know. Hence the 😉

That's exactly why I don't play games any more. It doesn't seem of any interest to me now. Strange, just a few years back I was enjoying titles such as Quake II, Dune 2K, Blade Of darkness, but now I think I'm done with gaming. Actually, I lost all interest after I started to work fulltime. After you get home tired, problems occupying your head, you only think of how to get some rest and\or do something actually even slightly useful as I don't get paid for fighting monsters on the screen and it is neither easy nor entertaining.

I thought Defender was too complicated in what, 1982? Now I like a little complexity for my $30-50, as long as I am rewarded for my patience by deep, fun gameplay.

they have gotten easier IMO. FF3 US ff6 Jp took me 80+ hours to beat and FF 10 only took me 39. games like GTA3 are easy because they are supposed to be. it really depends on teh game. the old Contra for NES i coudl beat in 1 sitting. the newest one for PS2 is the hardest game ive ever played. KOTOR is hard and games like Zelda for GC and Halo are also hard and long. it really depends on teh type of game and what it was designed as
