Are USB wireless adapters still generally preferred over PCI based ones?

With my current D-Link DI-614+ I'm using a D-Link DWL-122 USB adapter. I've been having some issues after upgrading to SP2 with the device dropping connection after being connected to the internet for an extended period of time...

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I was able to purchase a Belkin Wireless-G router for free after rebate from Staples (still haven't installed it yet). Then, this week both OfficeMax and Staples have the Belkin Wireless-G PCI card for $9.99 after $30 rebate (no one seems to want to put Wireless-G USB adapters on sale:Disgust;).

Anyway, from what I've heard over the years is that USB adapters are preferred to PCI adapters since they are away from the PC's internals and are less prone to interference. Is this really still an issue and would I notice a degredation in signal quality/speed by going to a PCI based card?

I use PCI cardsd, and can't say that I've had any issues. I would actulay think a PCI card would work better than USB, since it's directly on the PCI bus.

I dont know about USB adapters, but I have a Dlink Wireless PCI G card in my computer and a Dlink Wireless Bridge for another computer at the house, as far as I can tell they both work great. I have no problems with either of them, no matter where I am in the house.

I've always heard the thought that they are external devices and aren't near interference from inside your PC...also you have more choice over where to aim the device to get a stronger signal.

well, the antennea is external anyway... but my main point was more of the fact it's USB. I've seen so many die and just flat out flaky.

USB tends to use more CPU cycles than PCI, so I prefer PCI. USB is just more convenient. As for the interference issue, I can't help you there. IMO get the PCI.

Well, I just picked up the Wireless-G PCI card from Staples and installed our new Wireless-G Belkin router. All is well :p
