Are USB headsets better for speech recognition

Compared to headsets that use a standard 1/8" audio cable, I guess. The interface isn't going to make any difference on sound quality, unless you have a crappy noisy soundcard or something.

This is a good mic for speach recognition. Compgeeks has them the cheapest (around $15 or $20 i think) but they're out right now. They get them in every so often, sign up for the alert if you want. Here they have them in stock but are more expensive.

*edit* yes it's usb, and works better for speech recognition than my regular one

It's not the interface, but that more USB headsets have built-in DSPs that filter out noise.

Most standard headsets (mini-DIN connectors) do not, and are geared mostly for voice comm. and basic speech recognition.

However, as general purpose CPUs get more powerful, you'll get better recognition from the software engine itself and the fancy headset DSP becomes less relevant. I think people (with disabilities, for example) who purchased dedicated speech recognition hardware a decade ago had to pay into the 5 figures for what is commoditized today and available for any PC (Pentium3 or later, realistically).

So if you have a good sound card and the latest proggy or speech then a usb headset makes no difference??

Is that right????

Clocker

If there is a moderate amount of background noise around you, you'd probably want to go with usb for the noise filter like manly suggested.
