Are transvestites and transexuals the same thing?

no. transexuals are people of one gender in the body of the other sex, while transvestites are people who wear the clothes of the other sex but have the same gender and sex

Yep. A transsexual assumes the identity of the opposite sex, while a transvestite merely likes to wear the clothes of the opposite sex.

Transsexuals are changing from one gender to the other: m>f or F>m.

Transvestites enjoy wearing women's clothes. This can either be sexual or nonsexual in nature. Some transvestites are straight and others are gay.

There's your answer.

Yep. A transsexual will also typically be taking female hormones in order to begin assuming a more feminine shape.
