are traffic tickets cleared by traffic school still counted as a point?

to my understanding a traffic ticket cleared by traffic school more or less means that the insurance company cannot use it towards you, however is it still counted as a point on your DMV record?

in california you can get up to 4 points before getting your license suspended.

finally, i hear that it takes 3 years since the last issued ticket, before your points goes away from your record. and 5 years for a car accident. can somebody verify this?
 
I don't think so. I got a ticket when I was 19 and went to traffic school for it. Went to the DMV to renew my license when I was like 22 and she said that my record was completely clear and it was like I never got a ticket. I was worried that even though it was "taken out" it would still be hidden somewhere for insurance companies to see but no it's not.
 
I don't know California, but usually the "Traffic School" route is a form of probation. If you take traffic School *AND* you don't get another moving violation for a year, the ticket is dropped.

If you take traffic school and get another moving violation, both tickets will count, and you are usually not eligible for traffic school on the second ticket.

Every state is different, but I believe this is the general concept for most.

i ended up doing some research and it seems like it does remove the point towards your record if you take traffic school, however if you get another one within 18 months you cannot take traffic school again and, thus leaving you with a total of one point and not two.

i also noticed something about the certificate of being at traffic school should be mailed to court, i can't recall what i exactly did, but shouldnt the traffic school in most cases mail that out for you? i know some online traffic school does it, but i actually went to one of those 8 hours in class traffic school courses, and i just hope that i completed the rest of the task and that point was indeed removed. this was almost 4 years ago so i cant recall what i actually did.

what i do know is that you get a warning letter after getting 2 points within 12 months, something i did during the year 2002 (a bit shy of 18 months since my first ticket that hopefully was erased), but i lost that letter and can't recall what points are on it, but i'm pretty sure there were only 2 points, the ones i got after.

anyways, can somebody confirm that the 8 hour traffic school does provide the service of mailing the certificate themselves to the court rather than having you do it.

THey'll give you a list of the approved online traffic schools. From there, just follow the instructions. It literally takes an hour to finish online traffic schools.

No, most courts want your signature on the cert, so most (at least online schools) send it to you to sign and then forward to the court.

anyways, can somebody confirm that the 8 hour traffic school does provide the service of mailing the certificate themselves to the court rather than having you do it.

That is going to depend on the school, but if you didn't sign the cert at some point, they probably didn't process it for you.

i just want to point out that i did not take online traffic school but "live" traffic school where you physically attend a class and watch a video and have an 8 hour lecture. i was given a handful of locations where i could take traffic school by the court.
 
I took California traffic school several months ago and they didn't mail the certificate for you. They will give you a certificate at the conclusion of the class and you gotta mail it in ASAP.
 
In FL, it's a 4hr course, and you have to show your certificate yourself -- not sure if you can mail or not..

Your point system sounds different from ours -- running a light is a 3-point moving violation..license is suspended after 12, IIRC (or 6 if you're under 18)..I'm not 100% positive, but I think that's how it works.
 
Actually, FL its a 4 hr course for 1 violation every 18 months. If you get a 2nd ticket in that time-frame, it takes a more expensive 8 hour course to get rid of that one.
 
even if u goto traffic school to get your points reduced, it wont help w/insurance. insurance companies will raise your premium as tho you didnt goto school

That is incorrect (at least in California).
 
In California, the insurance companies won't see your points if you go to school. You get to go to school once every 18 months. The points stay on your report for 3 years. The only people that see ALL of your points are police officers that look you up when they pull you over.

I learned this in my first traffic school class, back before they offered internet classes. Since then, I've taken internet classes twice and both times, took me all 30 minutes to finish them. Beats an 8 hr class any day.
 
ah..in virginia, it's not about points, but your ACTUAL record that the insurance companies look at. in VA, traffic school just erases the points, but the ticket is still on your record. 🙁

so you guys have 2 different records? one record for points that can be erased, and one where points cant be erased?

seems kind of vague to me. why not just have one record and the points that were "erased" are "tinted grey" and the ones that are still on the record are in "bold".....are you sure you got your facts straight?
 
it's not erased. i think you get 3 points subtracted from your record when u take drivers ed.

just like you get 1 point subtracted for every year you are violation free. and can bank up to 5 points to offset points from future tickets.
