Space efficient maybe...but compare the air flow of a 12-15" fan against 3-4 4" fans.

I don't think one is better than the other, it's just a form factor. Just don't over pay for gimmicky things like "blade less" fans. It's a neat idea but not worth paying 100's for.

Do they push more air or are they just more space efficient?
Fan blades are fan blades. Tower fans are probably for its form factor.

Anything medium or heavy duty, they're all squares.. probably for a reason.

Box fans > *

The white noise on those things can't be beat and they blow a shitload of air.

Any medium or heavy duty fans I've seen are round.

KINCROME Heavy Duty Floor Fan 20 (500mm)

Tower fans are also round, but in a narrower column and vertical. I've never taken one apart to know for sure, but I'd think they're an enclosed squirrel cage.

The common box fan is kind of an outlier and may be shaped that way to fill space when sitting in an open window or to allow it to stand with less support.
