Are those yellow signs with speeds listed before curves and the such enforced by law?

Maybe a stupid question... I'm refering to NY state here, but in general would be good to know too.

I always assumed they were mor or less warning signs, or recommended speed limits, but that as long as you didn't cause an accident then whatever. My old man says that they can pull you over in a 55 for going, say, 47 around a curve with a 40 sign in front of it.

Which way is correct? I mean, obviously a loaded 18 wheeler can't manuever as well as a 911 around tight coners, which is why I personally think they are there... anyone know for sure?

AFAIK they are not, though you could be stopped/fined/jailed for reckless driving (or an equivalent) if you are driving them at a high speed or in an unsafe manner.

wouldn't your life or the lives of your passengers outweigh the benefits of saving 3 seconds on that turn?

AFAIK, they won't stop you for going faster than the yellow signs, but if you get in an accident while going faster than the yellow sign indicates, then they will cite you for speeding as well as the accident.

Sigh... you've never taken route 56 South I see... the trip to go see my ex, if following all posted recommended signs, would take 1 1/2 hours. Driving still within the speed limit, but over the recommended limit (I know my car like the back of my hand, and know when I'm going too fast...) I could cut the trip down to about 50 minutes because the entire road was windy. saving 40 minutes each way 4 times a week or so adds up to about 5 hours a week saved, which is pretty significant...

Bingo.

If you're unfamiliar with the road, it's best to follow them... Sometimes when they say 15 they aren't kidding.

But most of the time, they're quite a ways over the conservative line & into ridiculous.

in driver's ed they said they were enforced.

a friend (who had a trans am at the time) claimed you could go at least twice as fast as it said.

1) Driver's ed is not always right. I found out when I took my test at the DMV. I was not marked off on the one question because they said everyone from my school was answering it wrong because we were given the wrong answer in driver's ed.

2) There are some that if you tried to go twice as fast without being in a racecar with a good driver you would not make it.

The 15 and under ones are the ones you really should be going that slow. I tried going around one marked 15 at about 25 once. Lets just say the back end started coming around, on my Accord:Q Usually though, if it says 35-40 I'll do about 60. The joys of sports suspensions:D

I love this forum! This is something I've always wondered. I love taking 270 degree exits extra fast.
