So I've been thinking about "upgrading" my computer(well, in quotes because it's a laughable proposition almost because it's so old) and while doing a little research I came across something nifty that might save me some money: socket 771 adapters. However I am curious as to what people's experiences are with these? Are they reliable? any hiccups? I currently use an E4500, and if I buy something like a xeon E5472 on ebay, that would be a huge upgrade. Plus add to it that my motherboard won't support more than 4gb of ram without a quad core cpu (??? weird why it wouldn't, the mem controller is in the chipset anyway) and I have an extra 2x2 gb just lying around.
I really don't do much with my computer except interwebbing and such. I don't need much of a PC, so if I can do a huge freshen up for 40 bucks, I'd much rather do that than spending 2 or 300 on a new entry level PC. But I don't want to do that if it's not reliable, I'd probably just go with one of the pared down Q8*** processors or something like that instead.
edit: well, a little more diligent research revealed that my motherboard in fact will not support a quad core. Oh well, maybe it really is time to scrap the ol' clunker... But I'd still like to know the answer to the question at least for informational purposes 🙂
edit again: OK figured out the stuff about the RAM, Looks like I'm stuck with 4gb period... quad cores support higher speed memory, not more ram. But my board's a g33m02 anyway, it's the g33m03 that supports quads.
