are those old handheld scanners any good?

I often really wish I could just have a little scanner to REALLY REALLY QUICKLY scan some little bit of text or something from a book and then print it out. (Sort of a way of "cutting" little passages out of the book without actually cutting or highlighting or anything)

I know back in the olden days, they used to have these "handheld scanner" things that were sort of like that, but I'm just wondering if there's something newer with more up-to-date technology that uses that sort of concept.

I can't find any. We have one of the old Logitech models at work that we use to scan in large plan files (or sections of them) and unfortunately that one is so old that there are only Win98 drivers for it. So we still have one machine that runs the outdated OS just so we can still use the scanner.
