Are those foam pads near the corners of CPU top surfaces critical?

One of my CPUs has stopped working and it's missing 3 of those 4 pads. What purpose do they serve, and are they essential?

I think the CPU is dead because it looks like I chipped the hell out of one edge of the core 🙁 but I'm curious about those pads.
 
They basically support and distribute the weight of the heatsink when it is mounted, to keep it from tilting and chipping the core. After the heatsink is mounted, they no longer serve that purpose.
