Blu-Ray can hold a lot more episodes per disc plus the boxes are not as tall alowing many more to be fit into a cabinent.

If they do it wont be to put everything on a single disc. The folks that put those things out use the number of discs as an excuse to charge more money. Most shows dont put nearly enough episodes on each disc, with the exception of MASH. MASH episodes average around 25 minutes each, and they put 8 episodes on a single DVD. 3 DVD's in each season, no more. (With the exception of the special features disc in the final season, which not everyone has.)

Same for most one-hour shows that average 45-50 minutes of screen time. They could actually shove 4 episodes on a single disc but they usually choose to put 3 or sometimes even 2 on a disc. They want an excuse to charge more money for less content by saying "7 DISC COLLECTORS EDITION!" Even though they could have used fewer discs.

Also, not everything is going on Blu-Ray. Some stuff will never see it, even newer things. The higher resolution of blu-ray is only an advantage if its brand spanking new and was shot in HD video, or if its older and they have the original film to do a high quality digital transfer. For many old TV shows shot on magnetic tape, blu-ray is pointless. Same for old movies where they cant get their hands on the original film.

I suspect we will only see some of the newer TV shows on blu-ray, and I bet they will waste just as many discs as the DVD versions. Let me check my favorite spot, CD Universe, and I'll get back to you.

As for the smaller boxes, I am sure those will be the next big deal. You are correct that they can shove more cases on a shelf with them. In fact, I'm kinda suprised that since they normally use the distinctive clear blue plastic, they didnt make them closer to CD-sized.

EDIT:
Damn! Beaten by a faster poster yet again. And bumped as well. WTF??
OK here it is.

It would seem he was correct. If blu-ray is the next cool thing, then they will put as much crap as they can on it simply because people are buying. It will not have anything to do with the superior image quality, merely higher resolution, which may not actually mean anything in the final product.

But they are still using as many discs as possible, which is fucking annoying.

They definitely should sell long running series on BluRay. I'd much rather buy The Simpsons 20 seasons on a single disk vs 20 packs of DVDs, or 10 seasons of SG1, etc.

in many cases the original filming is not high enough resolution to put in high definition... a blue ray of this content will look far worse than standard DVD and thus they will never do it.

I'm not talking about high definition they can put SD on blu-ray too.

And then you get all the idiots that think just because its blu ray it should be HD and they just got ripped off.

Unless it was filmed in digital at 480 or less, it could certainly be put into high definition.
