is the diamond supramax v.92 a winmodem? is the creative v.92? is any one of these better than the other?

Yes. I find the creative to be problematic on WinME installs. I have always had raving success with Diamond branded modems. YMMV.

If they are PCI modems, and if they are under $30-40, its probably a good bet that its a winmodem. If you are trying to avoid winmodems, personaly, I would go for an external modem that connects via serial port.
