ill cut to the chase.

whenever i play a game (max payne, max payne 2, etc), after a couple of minutes of play, ill start to see artifacts (they will be green and randomly pop up everywhere). i thought it was because of my overclock, so i put it back to stock (500/900) and the same thing happens. apparently, my card is going into the upper 100's (close to 125) for the temperature, and i dont think its ever gone beyond 70 before. right now its at 65 degrees idle.

i dont see any vga coolers for a 6600GT agp...im guessing im going to have to get a new card? i just got this one last summer so its not even a year old...

i thought the 6600GTs got hot, but not 100+ degree hot.

ummm if that is in celsius then hell yes that's WAAAAY too hot. At 125C you have probably done permanent damage to the GPU, especially if this has gone on long. With 4600 posts I would hope this is a joke thread. If not, your 6600gt is literally toast man, time for an upgrade.

unfortunately, this isnt a joke thread. i just figured out why the temps are high too...its because the fan freaking died/stopped working.

im guessing the card is toast? apparently leadtek has a 3 year warranty on their cards.

btw, my idle temp is 75C now.

I have the same video card and it came with a manual in which the shut-down point was named as 134 Celcius, which struck me as an amazingly high number. It idled around 50, and I never had artifacts with mine, nor did I ever find the right version of either Coolbits or Rivaturner, to put the temp right on screen in the game the way that ATI Tray Tools will do. I also find that Image Quality, most particularly the text clarity, is seriously lacking in both the 6600 GT and the 6800 GT I've replaced it with, when compared to relatively current ATI cards.

If the 134 is accurate, you may have some decent salvage value if you get a fan on it quickly. My Leadtek card's fan will load up with a layer of dust on every fan blade quite rapidly, in a rather ordinary house's environment. I am sure that means added load on the fan bearings, and rapid wearout.

Clean out the HSF if you haven't already.

Reseat it with AS5 and see what happens.

If you want a third party cooler a vf-700/vf-900 are both good.

Something is very wrong. When I had my 6600GT it was about 58 idle and 70+ load. I did some reading a while back and others were in this ballpark too.

yep...it was idling yesterday night (my friends came over and took a look at it) and it was at 125C!!!!! so we immediately shut it off. i guess i cant have it on longer than an hour.

i did fill out the online rma on leadteks site, as well as emailing them my proof of purchase (a pdf of the newegg receipt and the email invoice that newegg sent). hopefully they get it and will be able to get back to me this week.
